They say "keep your eyes on the prize", but sometimes the prize lands right on your lens! 🦉📷

Hi, I'm Maud, the photographer behind this account. I thought it was about time to introduce myself. As you all may know by now, my photography mainly revolves around animals and sometimes nature.

Nature had been my home for as long as I can remember. Between studying for my Applied Biology degree and hanging out with the birds at @uil_topia, I'm constantly reminded why protecting our ecosystems is so vital. I also spend my time working as a Budget Committee for @restorethelegacy to ensure we're investing in a greener future, and will also be doing my abroad internship here.

My goal is a career in ecology, dedicated to understanding and protecting the natural world I care so much about. I'm glad you're here to follow the journey and I can't wait to see where this path takes me!

Timon and Zazu in the snow ❄️

Snow has fallen in the Netherlands for the first time in years, so I took the opportunity to take some photos of the birds in the snow. It's safe to say that they absolutely loved it! Snow has become quite a rare occurrance in the Netherlands with climate change, so seeing such a think layer again makes me really happy.

Timon (on the left) is a mottled owl and Zazu (on the right) is a rafous-legged owl. These two species are close cousins in the Strix genus. Though they typically live in warmer climates, snow does occur in the regions they inhabit.

Fizzy and Ozzy in the snow ❄️

As true winter birds, Fizzy and Ozzy are enjoying the snowy days a lot. Originally living in the ural mountains of Russia, these owls are well adapted to the cold. Their feet are fluffier in comparison to other owl species and they have a thicker layer of feathers to help keep them warm.

It will be snowing in the Netherlands for a few more days. I really hope the snow will be going on for a bit longer, because I can't get enough of the animals in the snow. Are you enjoying these pictures as well? taken in Arkelshoef by @inwildframes

Australia's smallest owl 🦉

The Australian boobook is the smallest and most widespread owl species in Australia. Despite its modest size, this nocturnal hunter feeds on a variety of prey, including insects, small mammals, reptiles, and other birds.

Unlike many owl species that rely heavily on stealth, boobooks combine excellent hearing and sharp eyesight to locate prey in the dark. Their distinctive "boo-book" call is also the origin of their common name.

Although the species is currently not considered threatened, protecting native woodlands remains important to ensure these remarkable predators continue to thrive across Australia.

Have you ever heard an owl calling at night?🦉🌙

Life in the Alps ⛰️

The Alpine marmot is one of the most iconic mammals of Europe's mountain landscapes. Living in family groups, these social rodents spend much of the summer feeding on alpine vegetation and building the fat reserves needed to survive their long winter hibernation.

Well adapted to cold mountain environments, Alpine marmots face a growing challenge as temperatures continue to rise. Unlike humans, they cannot sweat efficiently to cool themselves down. During increasingly warm summers, marmots may spend more time sheltering in their burrows to avoid overheating, reducing the time available for feeding and preparing for hibernation.

As climate change continues to alter alpine ecosystems, protecting mountain habitats will become increasingly important for species like the Alpine marmot.

Built for the Hunt

The secretarybird is one of Africa's most unique birds of prey. Unlike most raptors, it spends much of its time hunting on foot, using its long legs to stalk prey across grasslands.

Famous for its ability to hunt snakes, the secretarybird delivers powerful, lightning-fast kicks that can disable dangerous prey before it has a chance to strike back.

A true predator that proves you don't always need to hunt from the sky.

Sadly, secretarybird populations are declining across much of their range due to habitat loss, agricultural expansion, and human disturbance. Today, the species is classified as Endangered, highlighting the importance of protecting Africa's remaining grassland ecosystems.

A Master of Color and Camouflage

The Guadeloupe anole is a tree-dwelling lizard native to the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe. Known for its striking colors and patterns, this species can vary considerably in appearance across different parts of the island.

Like many anoles, it uses visual displays such as head bobbing and extending its colorful throat fan, called a dewflap, to communicate with rivals and potential mates.

Small, colorful and highly adapted to life among the trees, the Guadeloupe anole is a fascinating example of island evolution.

Have you ever seen an anole before?

Silent Hunters of the Forest

The Ural owl is a powerful forest-dwelling owl found across parts of Europe and Asia. It relies heavily on its exceptional hearing to locate prey, allowing it to hunt even in low light conditions.

Its soft feathers help create near-silent flight, making it an efficient predator of small mammals and birds. With their large dark eyes and distinctive facial disk, Ural owls are perfectly adapted for life in the forest.

Picture here are Ozzy and Fizzy, two magnificent ambassadors of their species.

Nature's optical illusion

The brilliant colors of the Indian peafowl aren't actually produced by blue and green pigment. Instead, microscopic structures in the feathers reflect and scatter light, creating the shimmering iridescent colors that make this bird so iconic.

During the breeding season, males display their extravagant train to attract females, turning one of nature's most remarkable optical effects into a courtship display.

Did you know their colors come from feather structures rather than pigment?

The Ghost of the Taiga

The Siberian tiger is the largest cat in the world. Living in the cold forests of eastern Russia, these powerful predators have developed a thick coat and can roam across territories covering hundreds of square kilometers in search of prey.

Despite their strength, Siberian tigers remain endangered due to habitat loss and poaching. Conservation efforts have helpen stabilize some populations, showing that protecting large predators is possible when suitable habitat is preserved.

From Nest to Migration

Every migrating white stork starts its journey here.

Hidden between the leaves, this young stork is still completely dependent on its parents. During the breeding season, adult storks make countless foraging trips to provide enough food for their rapidly growing chicks.

In just a few months, this youngster will leave the nest and begin exploring the world on its own. The thousands of kilometers that storks travel between Europe and Africa all start with moments like this.

Seeing an adult and chick together always puts their incredible migration into perspective.

Have you ever spotted a stork nest in the wild?
