The newest episode of Downtown Dish is out now! Hosts Anna Moyers Stone and Charlie Nusser kick things off with a quick rundown of pre-holiday fun in Downtown Iowa City, including the Kids Market, Hunt for the Elves, and Small Business Saturday, before welcoming this month’s guest: Leslie Nolte.

Leslie, the founder of @nolteacademy, @iowaconservatory (ICON), and @thejamestheater, shares her journey as a dancer, educator, and entrepreneur. She talks about launching Iowa’s only accredited visual and performing arts high school, building community through the arts, and the lively world of running multiple creative spaces downtown. From behind-the-scenes Nutcracker stories to the inspiration for the James Theater’s iconic raccoon painting, it’s a conversation full of humor, insight, and local pride.

ICON student Ada, along with Kyle, our Visual Arts Chair, attend National Portfolio Day, hosted by Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design. This event allows Ada to meet with accredited art and design universities and colleges to ask questions about their programs and get feedback on how to improve her portfolio for post-secondary submissions.

Always learning beyond the classroom... Our Photography I students recently took a field trip to Wilson’s Orchard to capture the beauty of the season as part of their Nature Triptych assignment.

Now comes the fun part—seeing their creative vision come to life! Their final photographs, along with drawings, mobiles, and more, will be on display at ICON during the Downtown District’s Fall Gallery Walk on Friday, October 2. Come see what our artists are creating!

ANNOUNCING ICON ON STAGE: ICON students are gearing up for something big! Our 2026-27 season takes off this November with Sense and Sensibility, followed by three J-Term productions — 12 Ophelias, Kodachrome, A Collection of Shakespeare Hits — and our spring musical, Ride the Cyclone. All performances take place at Iowa Conservatory and The James Theater. Full-time ICON students are eligible to audition. As an accredited high school, ICON will be participating in the 2026-27 Iowa High School Musical Theatre Awards (IHSMTA) program.
