Frozen Moments, Lasting Truths: The Eternal Value of Photojournalism

Frozen truths endure—
history in a shutter,
time stilled, hearts awakened.

In the rush of the digital age, we risk losing the essential practice of slowing down, reflecting on our lives, and engaging in thoughtful, critical inquiry before acting.

Photographic trends now shift as rapidly as fashion, pushing visual communicators to keep pace with the medium’s accelerating demands. But this urgency often comes at the cost of thoughtful engagement with both subject and viewer. Imagine the possibilities if we chose to slow down—if we honored our subjects as individuals with stories, rather than treating them as mere visual props.

The still image compels us to pause, distilling the flow of experience into a single, definitive moment. As photojournalists, we create the most democratic of contemporary art forms—one that repeatedly confronts us with our values, prejudices, fears, and hopes, rendered in a visual language accessible to all. A powerful photograph stands alone, independent of its creator, and its impact may be intentional or serendipitous.

Photography is the unique medium that transcends linear time, establishing a complex relationship with the past, present, and future. Unlike written or spoken narratives, which require sequential engagement, photographs freeze singular moments, allowing viewers to interact with time nonlinearly. In photojournalism, this quality matters most: the medium documents real events as they unfold, evokes powerful emotional responses, provokes critical thought, and can shape societal perceptions with immediacy and clarity.

So as the art season approaches, I send a kind invitation to visit galleries, pop-ups, and non-traditional art spaces that celebrates the power of the still image because #still images still matter. See you soon, and stay in touch. taken in ipcartspace by @ipcartspace

Edouard Duval-Carrié’s “From Venice with Love” is a captivating celebration of artistic vision shaped by decades of thoughtful exploration. This exhibition at The Betsy Hotel, Miami Beach, draws deeply from Duval-Carrié’s reflections at the Venice Biennale, channeling the energy of a global crossroads into a vibrant reflection on identity, migration, and the intricate layers of cultural memory.

Duval-Carrié’s art is a powerful fusion of myth, history, and contemporary realities. He masterfully interlaces stories from the Global Borderless Caribbean with universal themes, prompting us to reconsider the legacies of colonialism, the complexity of diasporic identity, and the resilience of marginalized communities. Through his diverse use of media and technique, Duval-Carrié invites viewers to contemplate how movement and memory shape our sense of place and belonging.

Venice—a city alive with its own blend of ancient grandeur and contemporary innovation—inspired Duval-Carrié on the city as a metaphor for the constant flow of cultures and ideas. The Biennale became both a stage and a catalyst, strengthening his resolve to amplify the narratives of the Caribbean diaspora and highlight the transformative power of cultural exchange.

Upon returning to Miami, Duval-Carrié infuses “From Venice with Love” with the insights gained abroad. The exhibition is both a personal homage and public invitation—a space for Miami’s audiences to engage with the global conversations that animate his work. It encourages us to explore how personal and collective histories intersect and continue to shape our shared sense of self.

Ultimately, “From Venice with Love” is more than an exhibition—it is a clarion call for empathy, dialogue, and deeper understanding. Duval-Carrié’s art reminds us that through creative expression, we can bridge divides, honor our shared histories, and imagine more inclusive futures. His work stands as a testament to art’s enduring ability to connect, challenge, and inspire. taken in The Betsy Hotel by @ipcartspace

Impossible to explain but let me try….

After several days of work and relaxation, I say goodbye to the enchanting atmosphere of The Betsy Hotel. This space, which beautifully intertwines the humanities—poetry, visual and performance art, and music—has served as the perfect setting for our “From Venice with Love” activations.

The hotel’s world-class ambiance and dedication to guest experience provided an ideal setting for launching “The Bridge” activations. We began with an art exhibition featuring Edouard Duval-Carrié’s works, freshly returned from the Venice Biennale. I encourage you to explore previous posts and join us for future collective activations, made possible by the @perezfamilyfoundation’s CreARTE grant and the generous collaboration with The Betsy Hotel’s owners, Lesley and Jonathan. Special thanks to @briggs3325, @thebetsyhotel, and their wonderful events staff for their coordination. You’ve reminded me of the passion behind what I do. A heartfelt thank you to @rebecca_miami1968, @fiuphl, @iwitness2022, @hcaalliance, @miamidadearts, and everyone who came to celebrate the best of the U.S. Merci beaucoup.

During my residency, I discovered a powerful poem by Gabriel Reed that beautifully encapsulates art’s purpose and impact. It highlights the influence we all possess as creators and consumers of excellence.

Take a moment to reflect on the profound effects of love and integrity. I welcome your comments as we collectively affirm our choice to embrace life.

Au Revoir, beautiful Betsy, until we meet again. taken in The Betsy Hotel by @ipcartspace
