🎤*Join us after the screening on Sunday, October 11th, for a talkback with series co-curator Sam Shapiro, who taught film courses on Hitchcock at UNC-Charlotte for 30 years.

Sam Shapiro: Time to check in to the Bates Motel again. Cabin #1 preferably, although all twelve are clean and tidy (and usually vacant). If the motel proprietor doesn’t immediately appear in the office, give your car horn a toot and he’ll be right down.
When Psycho was released in 1960, it had a disruptive, galvanizing effect upon
audiences, critics, and the filmmaking industry. It seemed as if Hitchcock had released into the world a uniquely dangerous “film specimen” — one that would completely rewrite the rules for Hollywood censorship and audience expectations. Hitchcock later remarked “the content was, I felt, rather amusing and a big joke. I was horrified to find some people took it seriously.” Was Hitchcock being honest, disingenuous, or both?
There have been (and continue to be) books and documentaries and college courses devoted entirely to Psycho. Horror movies and suspense thrillers from the last 60 years owe an enormous debt to this inexpensively produced, fiendishly calculated film. So let’s check in to the Bates Motel again, shall we? by @iph_clt

Films in the series are used as tools for community building, offering a welcoming space for teens to connect, share interests, and engage in meaningful conversations about storytelling, culture, and creativity. Screenings include:

🎬Meshes of the Afternoon (14min) – This avant-garde classic, created in collaboration with her husband Alexander Hammid, is an important work of feminist filmmaking. Regarding the film’s subjective camera movement, jump cuts, and visual repetition, Deren wrote that it “is concerned with the inner realities of the individual and the way in which the subconscious will develop, interpret, and elaborate an apparently simple and causal occurrence into a critical emotional experience.” Here, in its original version, it is presented intentionally silent.

🎬The Tell-Tale Heart (23min) – “Madness, but will you say that I am mad? Murder, perhaps you judge too soon. For when you hear my story, you will certainly understand why, very gradually – I made up my mind to take the life of the old man.” True to the words of master storyteller Edgar Allan Poe, this stunning
adaptation brings to life what is perhaps Poe’s best known short story. Murder, madness and betrayal from within interweave in this fascinating study into the mind of one driven by his own demons to take the life of another.
