At Art Mumbai 2026, we bring together eight artists whose works offer distinct ways of constructing a world: through the symbolic force of a geometric form, the observation of a landscape, the arrangement of familiar objects or the spatial memory held within architecture. Our selection moves across modern and contemporary practices, allowing different generations of image-making to meet. Each work asks for its own pace of looking, opening questions of how place, memory and imagination acquire form. We look forward to welcoming you to Booth C44. Jagdish Swaminathan | Jamini Roy | K. What does a body retain after an action has ended? In Landscape with the Fall of Icarus, visual and performance artist Murari Jha brings the body, material and everyday gesture into the space of No Single Ground. His practice considers how social history, memory, trauma and resistance are carried through physical experience, and how even the most ordinary action can become a site of negotiation. Moving between performer and spectator, object and gesture, Jha creates a live environment in which touch, movement and duration produce their own traces. Presented as part of No Single Ground, curated by Satyajit Dave, during Ahmedabad Cultural Week. 1 November 2026 6:00–8:00 PM Iram Art Block A, 502–503 Navratna Park Ambli Bopal Road, Ahmedabad 380058 by @iramartgallery
Rakesh Patel’s The Architectural Maze-2 is installed at Jardin de Sculptures du Grand Launay in Semblançay, France, marking an important international milestone in his practice. Drawing on yantras, meditative diagrams and fragments of temple architecture, the sculpture gives sacred geometry a material and spatial presence. Circles, arcs and intersecting planes in corten steel create a structure whose openings are as carefully considered as its solid forms. At Grand Launay, the landscape becomes part of the sculpture’s spatial order. Its apertures frame fragments of vegetation, while shifting light redraws the boundaries between solid plane and open space. As one moves around the work, these relationships continually change. The corten steel surface continues to change through exposure to the elements, registering time through shifts in colour and texture. For us, this placement carries the significance of years spent supporting Rakesh’s practice. Harssh’s dialogue with Jean-Marc Decrop, the collector and contemporary art expert behind the sculpture garden at Grand Launay, helped bring this commitment into a new setting. Decrop is known for his early engagement with Chinese contemporary art and his role in bringing Asian artists to international attention. Seeing Rakesh’s sculpture at Grand Launay is a moment of particular pride, as an enquiry we have followed closely enters a wider conversation. We are delighted to see Iram Modern and No Single Ground featured in The Hindu as Ahmedabad Cultural Week begins across the city. In conversation with the publication, our Founder and Director, Harssh Shah, spoke about something deeply important to us: the need for sustained patronage and a wider culture of engagement with the arts in Ahmedabad. We hope this city-wide programme encourages more people to enter its galleries, encounter new ideas and participate in the cultural life being built here. At Iram, No Single Ground, curated by Satyajit Dave, brings together eighteen modern masters across painting, drawing and sculpture. We look forward to welcoming you to the exhibition. Eighteen modern masters. Eighteen distinct positions. No single ground. Across painting, drawing and sculpture, the exhibition moves between the body, landscape and abstraction, allowing each work to hold its own history while opening unexpected conversations across the gallery. A gallery’s engagement with modern art begins with looking closely, asking difficult questions and understanding why a particular work matters. Iram’s Founder and Director, Harssh Shah, speaks about No Single Ground, and the thinking that shapes Iram Modern: a programme built through considered selection, provenance, art-historical significance and the place each work holds within an artist’s practice. The exhibition returns to public view as part of the second edition of Ahmedabad Cultural Week (@ahmedabadculturalweek) bringing together eighteen modern masters across painting, drawing and sculpture. Iram Modern joins the second edition of Ahmedabad Cultural Week (@ahmedabadculturalweek ), a city-wide programme bringing together galleries, museums, cultural institutions and independent spaces across Ahmedabad. At Iram, No Single Ground, curated by Satyajit Dave, brings together eighteen modern masters to trace the many grounds from which modern Indian art emerged: the observed world, the body, landscape and, abstraction. Across paintings, drawings and sculptures, familiar names are encountered through carefully selected works, including several rarely available for public viewing. Together, they reveal Indian modernism as a field of distinct positions, shaped across generations, regions and intellectual histories. We invite you to experience No Single Ground during Ahmedabad Cultural Week, from 23 October to 1 November 2026. Viewing by private appointment. A. P. Santhanaraj (1932–2009) was a painter and educator whose work gave line a distinctive place within the development of modern art in southern India. He belonged to the influential generation associated with K. C. S. Paniker and S. Dhanapal at the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Madras, and became an important figure within the Madras Movement. Born in Thiruvannamalai, Santhanaraj completed his Diploma in Fine Arts in 1953 and pursued postgraduate study with a Government of India scholarship. He joined the college as a lecturer in 1958, later serving as Principal of the College of Arts and Crafts, Kumbakonam, and subsequently of its Madras counterpart from 1985 until his retirement in 1990. Through his practice and teaching, he influenced generations of artists in southern India. Santhanaraj’s visual language developed through an open-ended engagement with line, colour and pictorial space. He frequently worked with the surface laid flat, approaching it from different directions and allowing forms to emerge through the act of drawing. Lines divide, connect and unsettle the field; colour establishes atmosphere; figures appear without becoming fixed or fully enclosed. Women, lovers and faces recur as presences held between recognisable form and abstraction. He received Lalit Kala Akademi National Awards in 1957 and 1962, followed by honours including the Kalaimamani Award from the Government of Tamil Nadu and the Kala Ratna from AIFACS. His work was exhibited nationally and internationally and forms part of the collection of the National Gallery of Modern Art. In No Single Ground, Santhanaraj brings the body to the threshold of figuration and abstraction. The figure remains perceptible while line, colour and field acquire an independent structure of their own. Artwork in frame: Untitled , 1973 Acrylic on canvas 44 x 61 Inches No Single Ground Curated by Satyajit Dave Iram Art, Ahmedabad On view until 3rd November. Viewing is available by appointment. Ratan Parimoo is an artist, art historian and educator whose career has shaped both the practice and study of modern Indian art. Born in Srinagar in 1936, Parimoo studied painting at the Faculty of Fine Arts, The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, where N. S. Bendre was among his formative teachers. In 1956, he co-founded the Baroda Group of Artists, contributing to the emergence of Baroda as an important centre of post-Independence modernism. His early practice moved from landscapes of Kashmir and studies of Indian sculpture and miniature painting towards an increasingly abstract vocabulary. By the late 1950s and 1960s, line, surface, rhythm and architectonic form had become the principal elements of his paintings. His experiments with collage, printmaking and encaustic further expanded this enquiry, producing works in which visual experience is organised without dependence on a recognisable subject. Alongside his studio practice, Parimoo shaped art-historical study in India as an educator and scholar. He headed Art History and Aesthetics at M. S. University, served as Dean of Fine Arts. His scholarship spans classical, medieval and modern Indian art. He has been awarded the Padma Shri in 2025. In No Single Ground, Parimoo’s work presents abstraction as a rigorous method of pictorial thought, built through structure, movement and the changing relationships between forms. Artwork in frame: Biomorphic Forms - 3, 1972 Oil on canvas 32.7 x 23.6 Inches No Single Ground Curated by Satyajit Dave Iram Art, Ahmedabad On view until 3rd November.
