The art scene of the New York of the late 1950s and 1960s hosted many internationally renowned figures (some of whom have even become celebrities). Alongside these (mostly) male personnages stood Marisol. Born in Paris, half Venezuelan, half American, she was considered one of the most influential artists of her generation. A politically engaged woman, Marisol was mostly known for her sculptures exploring a wide range of societal issues. Yet she also produced a big number of drawings which are now being exhibited to the public for the first time in a major retrospective organized by Centro Botín in collaboration with the Buffalo AKG Art Museum: “Marisol: When Things Are Just Beginning. Drawings from 1949 to 2015”.

1. Saca la lengua, 1972
2. Untitled (The only salvation for an American is to become queer), ca. 1972-1974
3. Cultural Head, 1973
4. Get Away From My Fish, 1975

Yesterday I visited the Fondation Folon for the first time. It is located in La Hulpe, next to the château of the same name, about 20 km south of Brussels (and I did a hiking through the woods to get there!).

I have to admit (with no little embarrassment) that I didn’t really know the work of Jean Michel Folon until long after I had moved to Brussels. What a discovery!

I’ve always loved painting, but never before had watercolour fascinated me in quite this way. Folon was many things: he even conceived and designed the museum that now houses his foundation and his work. To me, though, he is simply the master of watercolour.

His palette instantly brings to mind the sea, sunsets and summer light. Although Folon spent many years living in Knokke, on the Belgian coast, his paintings somehow take me somewhere else entirely: home, to the Mediterranean. And that’s where the magic happens.

With Europe melting under this heatwave, what better place to escape than a sunset by the sea?

I came across Kenian-British artist Michael Armitage’s work in 2022, when I was living in Madrid, studying my master’s in museology and cultural heritage. It was his first solo show in Spain, in Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando. Curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist, the exhibition brought Armitage’s paintings and drawings into dialogue with the graphic works of Francisco de Goya, one of his greatest inspirations.

Four years later, I get the chance to rediscover Armitage’s work during my first visit (and certainly not the last one) to the (most definitely) most beautiful city in the world: Venezia. Walking the rooms of Palazzo Grassi, the first Venice site of the Pinault Collection, in the opening week of the 61st Biennale, I have fallen in love once again with the colours he uses to paint his characters, often references from films and novels, his monkeys and his trees; with the shapes circling, enveloping, the human figures; his interiors but even more his African paysages, often urban; and with the textures of his “lubugo” canvas, a material made from Ugandan ficus tree bark. Curated by Jean-Marie Gallais, in collaboration with Obrist, “The Promise of Change” exhibition invites us to reflect on identity but also on a broader (as much as one wants) meaning of humanity.

I created this account to share the art, artists, and places I love, both as a personal memory and as an open door for anyone curious to discover them. If you didn’t know Armitage yet, I hope you get the same chance I did!

Here’s my selection of paintings from different sections and times. From left to right:

2. #mydressmychoice, 2015
