Lifting up our sixth land steward on🌾VOICES FROM THE LAND

A collaborative op-ed and video series by Farm School NYC & Iris Crawford-Maskell at The New Harvest Project. 📣 Each episode highlights urban and rural farmers, policy that impacts their work, and what we can do to uplift legislation reflective of their needs to direct future policy decisions. Check it out at the link in our bio!

Black Yard Farm @theblackyardfarm sits on 89 acres in Washington County, New York. For founder Ashanti Williams, it was never about simply producing food. As a Black woman farmer raised in the Bronx by activists and land stewards with roots in the Carolinas, Ashanti is passionate about working with animals and building sustainable farm systems. Experiencing a lack of safe, inclusive learning environments for people of color in animal agriculture inspired her to create those spaces for others.

Black Yard Farm is an opportunity to hold space for this knowledge and build new restorative systems that value all beings present, working the land and beyond. We are owed the same opportunities to build sustainable, profitable businesses that nourish our lives and communities.

That is a radical idea in a capitalist society, and we must hold on to it.

Lifting up our fifth land steward on🌾VOICES FROM THE LAND

Rather than building entirely new food systems, New York should strengthen its existing networks. The forthcoming city-owned grocery stores proposed by Mayor Mamdani’s Administration @nycmayorsoffice @nycmayor offer an opportunity to do so. Will local farmers have a seat at the table? Will worker-owned cooperatives and the existing local food ecosystem be part of the initiative? How might local farmers and this Mayor’s office work together to strengthen food access?

Steph Wiley, @stephwbkp who is dedicated to ensuring that every New Yorker can access healthy food through the worker-owned food distribution cooperative, Brooklyn Packers @brooklynpackers @brooklynsupportedagriculture. His focus is on creating a blueprint for neighborhood owned food hubs that connect QTBIPOC farms and aggregators with both communities in need and new markets. These hubs improve health and economic outcomes while promoting better nutrition. By envisioning worker-owned hubs encompassing wholesale, retail, and agriculture businesses, he works to create abundant job opportunities and promotes year-round access to fresh, local, affordable, and culturally relevant food for all New Yorkers. By addressing basic needs and fostering community connections, he believes these hubs can help create more resilient neighborhoods that thrive. Steph resides in Poughkeepsie, New York with his family.

Nadia Muyeed Adewale is the co-founder of Liberation Farm, which is located in Chester, New York. Nadia shares that for Black farmers, financing isn’t as simple as turning in an application, submitting the necessary paperwork, and getting approved. For decades, Black farmers have faced extreme challenges, especially when trying to access the systems that are supposed to help farmers farm. That still rings true today.

Today, we celebrate our first wedding anniversary. One year ago today we said “I DO” 💍💒❤️

Time has really flown by with @samuelmaskell as he is best hubby a girl could ask for. ❤️Our first year has taught us that patience, communication, and intentional effort will keep us going. Samuel continues to show me what deep partnership, intimacy, and friendship looks like and for that I am deeply grateful. 🥹

I LOVE YOU HUBBY! 💕💜

Climate Week NYC was so special 💗. While a cold 🤧got my halfway through, here were some highlights:

1. @ejohp_ had its first day-long event where we debuted its print magazine and honored so many of the women-leaders of the environmental justice movement. Thank you @cam_in_underland for your leadership and @ithinkthereforeiambar , Ameena and Prof. Allred for your parntership in making this amazing day incredible.

2. A Food Policy Summit: Stories from the Frontline of Climate and Farming, where panelists talked about the ecological cost of the degradation of our soil health and why we must change the material conditions of farmers. I also learned about the RING (Regional Indigenous Nutritional Diet) Chef Sean Sherman will be launching soon at @natifs_org

3. Together with the America 433+ campaign, @resistancerangers @raceforwardaction, Branch 4 and @unionofconcernedscientists boarded the @statenislandferry to talk about the censorship of climate, Black and Indigenous science across our national parks. When signs, webpages, and public education materials are removed or rewritten to suit a political agenda, the public loses access to the stories that help us understand who we are. You can learn more about the incredible campaign we’ve been working on all summer!

Thank you @squalllionmonochrome for my new personality pic!

Lifting up our fourth land steward on🌾VOICES FROM THE LAND🪏
A collaborative op-ed and video series by Farm School NYC & Iris Crawford-Maskell at The New Harvest Project. 📣 Each episode highlights urban and rural farmers, policy that impacts their work, and what we can do to uplift legislation reflective of their needs to direct future policy decisions. Check it out at the link in our bio!

This features Kadeesha “Kitty” Williams is an activist and the co-founder of Iridescent Earth Collective. They are a former NYBG Community Horticulturist/Urban Agriculturist.

Iridescent Earth Collective breaks the traditional models of what a farm is—not just a business but a community institution. We exist as a source of education, food security, environmental stewardship, and cultural connection. We build relationships between neighbors and create resilience during times of crisis. IEC’s land project is a small-scale 3-acre farm that produces food for local and regional distribution. All of the food we grow goes to the local food banks and Bronx distribution points in need.  Who do we consider a farmer, and how can we, as a society, make it easier for communities and collectives like IEC to thrive?
