Nadia shares that for Black farmers, financing isn’t as simple as turning in an application, submitting the necessary paperwork, and getting approved. For decades, Black farmers have faced extreme challenges, especially when trying to access the systems that are supposed to help farmers farm. Check it out at the link in our bio!  Black Yard Farm @theblackyardfarm sits on 89 acres in Washington County, New York. For founder Ashanti Williams, it was never about simply producing food. As a Black woman farmer raised in the Bronx by activists and land stewards with roots in the Carolinas, Ashanti is passionate about working with animals and building sustainable farm systems. Experiencing a lack of safe, inclusive learning environments for people of color in animal agriculture inspired her to create those spaces for others. Black Yard Farm is an opportunity to hold space for this knowledge and build new restorative systems that value all beings present, working the land and beyond. We are owed the same opportunities to build sustainable, profitable businesses that nourish our lives and communities. What a day, what a day… This evening went “On & On”… from farm table to Forest Hills Stadium. More than 15 years after her first Outstanding in the Field dinner at Queens County Farm Museum, AmNewsFOOD editor Kysha Harris returned for another singular Queens experience. This time, farmer-founded beverage company Tractor and Chef Will Coleman brought together thought leaders in Black foodways, farming and media for fellowship, a walk around the farm and an outstanding late-summer meal. The night continued at Forest Hills Stadium with the iconic Erykah Badu and legendary producer The Alchemist. The forthcoming city-owned grocery stores proposed by Mayor Mamdani’s Administration @nycmayorsoffice @nycmayor offer an opportunity to do so. Will local farmers have a seat at the table? Will worker-owned cooperatives and the existing local food ecosystem be part of the initiative? How might local farmers and this Mayor’s office work together to strengthen food access? Steph Wiley, @stephwbkp who is dedicated to ensuring that every New Yorker can access healthy food through the worker-owned food distribution cooperative, Brooklyn Packers @brooklynpackers @brooklynsupportedagriculture. His focus is on creating a blueprint for neighborhood owned food hubs that connect QTBIPOC farms and aggregators with both communities in need and new markets. These hubs improve health and economic outcomes while promoting better nutrition. By envisioning worker-owned hubs encompassing wholesale, retail, and agriculture businesses, he works to create abundant job opportunities and promotes year-round access to fresh, local, affordable, and culturally relevant food for all New Yorkers. By addressing basic needs and fostering community connections, he believes these hubs can help create more resilient neighborhoods that thrive. Every environmental justice fight needs someone willing to keep the camera rolling long after the news crews leave. Join us on Monday, September 21, at 1:00pm during NYC Climate Week for a panel that tackles the role and responsibility of documentarians for environmental justice communities. This panel brings together documentary and impact producers bridging major studios and grassroots storytelling to tackle the question every filmmaker faces in this moment: what actually happens after the credits roll, and how can we have the greatest impact through documentary film? We’ll dig into how documentary film – short and long-form – moves audiences from empathy to action on environmental justice, and what it takes to make sure a story doesn’t just get watched, but gets used. Featuring: • Maya Lilly – Award-winning documentarian, producer, and climate storyteller leading the original production at The YEARS Project, the Emmy-winning media nonprofit redefining how the world understands climate change. • Marianna Olinger – Impact Strategist for DOC SOCIETY, Director for Earth Alliance, an impact advisor for the docu-series Vs. Check it out at the link in our bio!  This features Kadeesha “Kitty” Williams is an activist and the co-founder of Iridescent Earth Collective. They are a former NYBG Community Horticulturist/Urban Agriculturist.  Iridescent Earth Collective breaks the traditional models of what a farm is—not just a business but a community institution. We exist as a source of education, food security, environmental stewardship, and cultural connection. We build relationships between neighbors and create resilience during times of crisis. IEC’s land project is a small-scale 3-acre farm that produces food for local and regional distribution.
