I never imagined I would get into Cambridge and I didnt believe I’d ever fit in with the “posh kids”.

One guy changed that. He really saw me and he gave me a chance. And then he made sure I didn’t get kicked out at the end of my first year, for prioritizing socializing and sports over my degree.

Last month I got to see him again for the first time in twenty years. 20 years of playing Words with Friends and swapping DMs on Facebook. I got to introduce him to my son and my wife. And I got to thank him. Thank him for everything, because he shaped my life in a very profound way.

Now we say goodbye. At least for a while. Dr B I am so grateful for your teaching, your friendship, your belief, your kindness and your sense of humor. I will carry everything you taught me forward.

Last Friday, I was given the Groundbreaker Award by PAM CUT at their Annual Cinema Unbound Awards.

Standing on that stage, being handed an award by Justice Adrienne Nelson, felt particularly surreal and completely overwhelming.

A few years ago, I was sitting in the audience at Adrienne’s investiture, convinced I had somehow been invited by mistake. Last night felt like one of those rare full-circle moments.

More than anything, though, I felt lucky.

Lucky to have grown up in Larne with parents and big brothers who taught me to think big.

Lucky to have found my way to Portland—a city that continually bets on artists, activists, dreamers, and people with slightly unreasonable ideas.

Lucky to have somehow convinced an incredible group of people to join me in building Wildfang.

Lucky to be part of a queer community that taught me the power of showing up fully as yourself.

Lucky to have customers who believed in what we were building long before there was any evidence that it would work.

The older I get, the more I realize that almost every meaningful thing in my life has happened because somebody opened a door, took a chance on me, or simply pulled me aside and said: “You got this, Emma.”

So while my name may be on this award, I am well aware that it’s a shared one.

Thank you to PAM CUT. Thank you to Amy Dotson. Thank you to my wife Amy, my family, friends, team, and this incredible city.

And thank you to everyone who has been part of the Wildfang story.

What a privilege it is to spend your life surrounded by people who refuse to accept the world as it is—and are brave enough to imagine what it could become.
