a little book that caught my eye while putting things back in the library the other day.

A Kids Book About Feminism by Emma Mcllroy does a lovely job of introducing a rather complex subject to young readers in a way that's accessible without feeling overly simplistic.

i noticed that the book recommends reading it with an adult, which i thought was a lovely touch given the subject and the conversations it might open up. one of my favourite details is the little outro at the end, where the author goes, "that was pretty intense, huh?"

because it is a lot to take in! and i really liked that the book acknowledges this rather than simply ending after explaining the concept. it felt almost like a little debrief, giving young readers a moment to process what they've just learnt.

it's a small detail, but i thought it was such a thoughtful way to approach a subject that can be quite overwhelming, even for adults.

Now that I am soaking wet from unloading groceries in a full on rain storm, I suppose it’s time for Ye Olde Summer Photo Dump. From Legoland and camping trips as the World’s Best Godparents©️to World Cup takeovers and interacting with a double rainbow in a waterfall in Iceland to lots of garden time and lovely hangs with friends to album and film shoots to a knock down case of Covid which led to approximately 20 hours of Hobbit and LOTR viewing, it’s been the fastest summer of my life.

So grateful for these two. Whenever the three of us are together it feels like home. So grateful to have wrapped filming on the Dragathon documentary last night. So grateful Darcelle created something so special it still stands even as she’s gone. So grateful to allllllll the people who’ve helped us get this far from the club’s talent/staff/owners to incredibly generous donors to friends giving up time and listening ears to cheerleaders of all kinds to the incredible film crew I feel thrilled to work with to Ashod putting up with actual years of me saying I gotta do a thing and I need you to be into it.

And so grateful Poison put the hot blonde wig on me.

Today marks THREE YEARS since we broke the Guinness World Record for the longest drag show of all time. (As evidenced by this sleepless photo somewhere around hour 30.) I can’t believe it’s been that long. I can’t believe we’re inching toward this uplifting, joyful documentary being done, to show the world how much love went into it. I can’t believe Emma, Poison, and my friendship survived this insanity. I can’t believe thousands of people—volunteers, audiences, performers—came together to make this happen. I can’t believe places like Darcelle XV exist. I can’t believe we live in a world so cruel to the 🏳️‍🌈 community that we needed to raise $311,000 for the Trevor Project’s crisis line for queer kids to not want to hurt themselves.

What a night hosting @pam_cut Cinema Unbound Awards last week!

We were beyond honored to be any part of helping @pam_cut raise money to keep funding ART in Portland, Oregon.

We was a blast to:
- emcee
- curate interactive props for the audience
- tailor props for the evenings honorees
- perform a musical dance number!

Thank you @amdotson19 and @maybe.megansoane for believing in us and for all the opportunities for us to be our authentic over the top selves. You two just get it.

It’s taken me a full week to recover from the absolute wild fun of PAM CUT Cinema Unbound Week. The dinners, the committee meetings, the anticipation, breaking out the old sewing machine to make a dress that 10000 percent made me look like a cult leader (swipe to the end to see what that world would look like). I got to see Maria Bamford drag an inflatable T-rex on stage. Someone told me later she laughed at a bad joke I made on stage and that pleased me. I got to watch my bestie Mackles absolutely destroy at a beautiful and timely speech, I got to watch Amy Dotson (the actual cult leader) get a whole room amped about art and film in a way that made me proud to be a Portlander. And the fashuunnnnnnn. To everyone who stepped it up, I see you and applaud you. Life is so short. Wear the fun thing. Go see art. Watch movies with friends. Celebrate this city and people when we’re trying. And make outfits that are so bright your Lyft driver will ask you if you had to wear sunglasses when you got dressed.

happy pride 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️ in the midst of the queer community being under threat globally with debates of rights being rolled back and increased hate crimes & hostility, corporations that keep quiet all year round still don’t have any problem putting out a rainbow flag and releasing limited edition merch.

this is the opposite of allyship. pride is not an opportunity to exploit a cause for profit!
