POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
37 years in the studio.

I’ve made a lot of plates, printed a lot of paper, and created memories that will stay with me forever.

The best part? That feeling when I pull the press through and reveal the print. After all these years, it still makes me do the happy dance.

And being able to share that excitement with others is pretty special too.

What’s your best piece of printmaking advice?

Printmaking Made Easy.
We manufacture Printmaking Materials and equipment here in Ironbridge, Shropshire. We do this because we are crazy about making our own work. We as a family business love printmaking.
Over the years we have developed our own range of wonderful Printmaking materials that are very much needed in the studio.
I love making my own life easier as I print all the time and I print my own work and editions for galleries and publishing houses so it's a must for me to have the best of the best.
(Plus I run workshops in all printmaking techniques as well - which I love doing)
And we sell all over the world.

To mention a few...
🎨 Registration Beds - for our presses as well as bespoke sizes for other presses
🎨 Hotplates - perfect control and a wonderful design, built to last forever! Standard and Bespoke sizes
🎨 Spindle Rollers and Hand Rollers - 3 different harnesses of nitrile rubber - built to last and ink up perfectly every time!
🎨 Etching and Relief Ink - My recipe - stay open, you can even put back in the tub what you don't use. Excellent range of colours and is very affordable and so so beautiful to use! Dry within a day of printing but never skin over.
🎨 Aquatint Boxes - standard sizes and Bespoke
🎨 Aquatint Shelves - amazing bit of kit!
🎨 Drying Wracks - standard sizes and Bespoke.
🎨 Dabbers for pushing ink into intaglio plates with hand-turned handles.
🎨 Wiping tables and workshop fitting
🎨 And our Gunning Etching Presses
And much more....

🔥 Who said printmaking starts with a pencil?

Today I’ve been playing with FIRE! 🔥⚡

Plasma cutting steel, creating new shapes, etching plates and generally having an absolute blast in the studio!

I’m busy creating a whole new collection of work for IMPRINT, and I thought I’d give you a little glimpse behind the scenes. There’s something incredibly exciting about turning a raw sheet of steel into a printing plate!

And we’re not just bringing the artwork…

Ironbridge Fine Arts & Printmakers are going BIG at IMPRINT!

We’ll have our own stand, THREE of our etching presses in action, and a fantastic line-up of talented printmakers joining us for live 45-minute demonstrations throughout the event.

Different artists. Different techniques. Lots of ink. And a proper celebration of everything we love about printmaking!

I’m ridiculously excited about it all. Just wish I had a few more hours in the day to make everything I’ve got planned! 😂

Here’s a little snippet of what I’ve been up to today. 🔥

Who’s coming to IMPRINT? Come and say hello!

PHOTO-ETCHING: ONE IMAGE, ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES!

One of the things I love most about printmaking is that there’s never just one way to make an image.

From ready-to-use photopolymer solar plates to traditional metal plates coated with photo emulsion, the possibilities are extraordinary.

You can work in relief or intaglio, create the finest photographic detail, experiment with different aquatint screens, introduce additional etched tones, or combine techniques to create something completely unique.

Over the years, I’ve developed our own photo-etching emulsion and aquatint screens, which we use in my studio every day. They’ve been developed through actual printmaking, testing, teaching and, of course, plenty of trial and error!

And the really exciting bit? The photographic image can be just the beginning.

Here are 10 ways to explore the wonderful world of photo-etching.

All our specialist photo-etching and photopolymer materials are available through Ironbridge Fine Arts & Printmakers, and we also teach these processes in our studio.

We don’t just manufacture and sell the materials. We make prints with them, that’s why we made them in the first place!!

12 THINGS I’VE LEARNED THE HARD WAY… PRINTMAKING EDITION! 🎨

I’ve been printmaking for nearly 40 years, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that understanding why something works is far more valuable than simply knowing how to do it.

Over the years, I’ve made thousands of prints, experimented with countless materials, taught printmakers around the world, and spent an enormous amount of time figuring out why things go wrong!

And believe me, things still go wrong. 😂

But that’s the wonderful thing about printmaking. Every plate, every block, every proof and every experiment teaches you something.

A beautiful print isn’t simply about having the right equipment. It’s about understanding your materials, how they behave, and how to get the very best from them.

So here are 12 things I’ve learned along the way. Some might surprise you, some might challenge what you’ve been taught, and hopefully a few will save you an awful lot of frustration in your own studio!

Swipe through the photographs for my 12 printmaking lessons. 👉

And I’d love to know…

What’s the one thing you’ve learned about printmaking that completely changed the way you work?

Let’s share some knowledge! ❤️

At the centre of Jenny Mason-Gunning’s work is a strong connection to landscape and memory. She is drawn to places where history remains visible: ruined buildings, ancient sites, industrial structures, weathered surfaces and the quiet edges of the natural world. These are places where human presence and natural change meet, offering a way to think about time, endurance and what is gradually being reclaimed by nature.

Jenny’s prints are not straightforward records of place. They are built slowly, through process, touch and repeated attention. Line, tone, texture and light become ways of exploring not only how a place appears, but how it feels.

There is a quiet intensity to Jenny’s printmaking. Her work develops through the physical language of the studio: metal plates, grounds, inks, papers, tools and the press itself. The slowness of the process is part of its meaning, with each stage requiring patience, skill and careful decision-making.

Grounded in printmaking tradition but continually evolving through experimentation and curiosity, Jenny allows each image to find the technique that best suits it.

As a printmaking specialist and author, Jenny brings a rare depth of knowledge to her practice, which extends beyond making prints to teaching, writing and sharing the possibilities of printmaking. Her work is technically accomplished, but never simply about technique. The process always serves the image, the atmosphere and the story held within the place.

This exhibition brings together richly worked etchings, layered relief prints and atmospheric intaglio pieces, revealing an artist deeply engaged with material, memory and the marks left behind by time.

Jenny Mason-Gunning’s prints invite us to look more closely, to notice what remains, and to consider the quiet beauty of places still carrying the traces of the past.

After a lot of research into print presses I purchased my fabulous Gunning etching press in 2017 from family run @ironbridgeprintmakers in Shropshire, they are an awesome bunch of people and their knowledge on printmaking is phenomenal.

My No.2 Gunning etching press has a bed size 50.8 x 100 cm which enables me to create prints a little larger than A2 and because its direct drive I can physically feel the plate, paper, and resistance as they pass through the press helping me connect fully with the printing process.

Earlier this year I bought another press from them, a Mini Thumper Tabletop Etching Press with its own wiping table stand so that I’ve got a more portable press to take with me to printmaking workshops and demonstrations.

Title ‘ Corruagation Study / Yellow Interrupts’
Tattoo gunned drypoint - First Strike 🪧
.
.
.
.
.
.
To create this experimental print, I started by using a tattoo gun & etching needle for mark making on Perspex. Then I created a separate monotype ( also on Perspex) just for the yellow painterly bit, which I whizzed through the press 1st with my damp/ blotted paper, then I used kitchen foil and yellow , light blue tissue paper for the chine-colle which sat on top of my inked up plate, then prayed to the print gods whilst running it through my @ironbridgeprintmakers press a 2nd time…I also used @ironbridgeprintmakers 🫟 🔵🌑oil based ink ( it’s amazing and doesn’t dry too quickly 🤩!) and as you can hear and see, just about managed to peel the plate of the paper to reveal the print in it’d entirety.
.
.
.
.
I’m planning on doing a few more prints with this plate as I’ve a few extra details I’d like to include and the registration on this print is a little off. Gotta admit it’s pretty fun using the tattoo gun and printing on kitchen foil !
.
.
.
Stay tuned for more experimental printing processes. ✌🏽

For more than six decades, Dave Gunning has drawn, painted and made prints directly from the British landscape, developing a deeply personal practice shaped by place, weather, memory and repeated observation.

At the heart of Dave’s work is drawing on location. Whether working among Britain’s ancient monuments or responding to a particular landscape, every drawing begins outside, directly in front of the subject. Changing weather, shifting light and the physical experience of being there all become part of the process.

Rather than simply recording a view, Dave responds to the atmosphere, history and character of a place — capturing what he describes as its “gritty and spiritual quality.”

Each work often begins simply in line before being developed further in his studio in Bridgnorth, Shropshire. Some pieces come together quickly; others remain in the studio for months, or even years, before he feels the need to return to them.

As Dave explains:

“I start all drawing works on location, starting in line to begin with. I then develop what I have done back in my studio. Sometimes they come together very quickly and other times I spend many sessions with them over a period of time. That time can be years! They tell me when to go back and work on them. This is the way I have worked for the past six decades.”

Our Autumn Exhibition celebrates the depth and continuity of Dave’s lifelong relationship with the landscape — but also an artist whose practice continues to evolve.

Over the past three years, Dave has been developing an exciting new body of work combining mixed media, etching and resin. This significant new direction will form the basis of his next exhibition, launching at Ironbridge Fine Arts in December 2026.

For now, you can discover a selection of Dave Gunning’s work as part of our current Autumn Exhibition at Ironbridge Fine Arts.

This autumn, Ironbridge Fine Arts brings together an exciting collection of original artwork exploring landscape, place, memory and the ways we see the world around us.

At the heart of the exhibition are three distinctive artists: Dave Gunning, Jenny Mason-Gunning and Gareth Day, each approaching landscape from an entirely different perspective.

For more than six decades, Dave Gunning has drawn, painted and made prints directly from the landscape, creating work shaped by place, weather, history and repeated observation. Jenny Mason-Gunning presents printmaking rooted in process, atmosphere and memory, moving across traditional and contemporary techniques to explore landscapes and places shaped by time. Photographer Gareth Day offers a completely different viewpoint, using aerial photography to reveal unexpected patterns, textures and relationships within familiar landscapes.

Their work is joined by a wider selection of exhibiting artists including Gary Walton, whose wonderfully imaginative paintings blur the boundary between reality and fantasy, and Rob Pountney, whose atmospheric watercolours explore the historic Wessex landscape.

Together, the exhibition moves between drawing, painting, printmaking, watercolour and photography, bringing different generations, techniques and ways of looking together within the gallery.

Whether you are looking for an original piece for your collection or simply want to spend time surrounded by art, we invite you to visit and enjoy our Autumn Exhibition 2026 at Ironbridge Fine Arts.
