Ironstone 100K is a savage point-to-point 100 kilometer ultramarathon on the wildest trails in the Alleghenies.

🏆 Introducing the first Eastern States 100 Volunteer of the Year award for 2026: Jeffrey Golden!

In March, Jeffrey fell 15 feet into a crater near Wasatch, Utah, suffering serious fractures and multiple ligament injuries. Rather than retreat, he chose to lean in, dedicating this season to what he calls “solidarity volunteering” (or what he calls, "being out there for as many hours as, if not more than, the last runner on the course.") At Worlds End, he captained High Knob and supported aid stations throughout the course. At Ironstone, he again volunteered station to station, then cheered every runner to the finish with a voice that seemed incapable of quitting. At Eastern States, he went above and beyond again: working aid stations, directing traffic, assisting runners across the Tomb Flats river crossing, sweeping, and helping retrieve the final runner after a medical situation nearly two hours past our official cutoff.
Jeffrey reminds us that the heart of trail running isn't just about the miles we cover, but the people who show up for one another when the going gets tough.

Jeffrey, our hats are off to you. Thank you for your grit, generosity, and extraordinary commitment to our runners and our community. You embody everything this award represents. ❤️ by @easternstates100

From 2022 through 2025, only three people managed to complete the PA Summer of Sufferfest: five of Pennsylvania’s hardest ultramarathons crammed into a six-month period.
This year, SEVEN MORE have voluntarily subjected themselves to the same questionable experiment.
To qualify for this distinguished and medically inadvisable fraternity, a runner must complete all five:

🪨Hyner Trail Challenge 50K: The traditional Pennsylvania introduction to poor decision-making. Fifty kilometers of rocks, roots, elevation and the dawning realization that this was only the beginning.

🪨Worlds End Ultramarathon 100K: A wilderness odyssey designed to make you question your relationship with hills, forests and the concept of forward progress.

🪨Ironstone 100K: One hundred kilometers of ridgelines, rocks, quartzite and consequences. A course specifically engineered to remind you that every voluntary decision has consequences

🪨Eastern States 100: The high altar of Pennsylvania suffering. One hundred miles around the “Wild and Bewildering” course, because apparently circumnavigating it once wasn't enough.

🪨Black Forest 100K: A dark, brutal excursion through the Reaper’s backyard, where the trails are rugged, the climbs are unreasonable and your previous four races offer absolutely no transferable warranty coverage.

And somehow, after all that, seven individuals finished all five.

Please congratulate the newest members of this exclusive club:
Kaylee Frederick
Lyle Kingaman
Phil Locke
Michael Nicoles
Tony Ruth
Matt Southwick
Dwyane Wolfe

From all of us at Eastern States: congratulations.
We are genuinely impressed.

We are also deeply concerned about your judgment.

You had six months. You could have taken up golf. You could have watched television. You could have spent a perfectly reasonable summer doing literally anything else. Instead, you chose this.

Welcome to the PA Summer of Sufferfest.
Your accomplishments are considerable. Your decision-making remains under review. taken in Little Pine State Park by @easternstates100

This weekend, we held a logistics recon at the Sideling Hill Tunnel, because apparently we needed to spend a perfectly good Saturday figuring out how to operate a 160-mile ultramarathon inside a giant, unlit hole in the ground.

If you’ve been living in a hole yourself and somehow don’t know anything about The VOID: it’s a 160-mile ultramarathon run on November 20-22, entirely inside an abandoned, unlit tunnel that was once part of the original Pennsylvania Turnpike, famously known as America’s First Superhighway.

Participants already signed up for this mind-twisting event will receive an email this week with a short survey and some important updates. A PDF Participant Handbook will follow a couple of weeks later.

In the meantime, you can continue questioning your sanity that this is a good idea at www.runthevoid.com taken in Sideling Hill Tunnel, Western Portal (Abandoned) by @easternstates100

🚨 BLACK FOREST ULTRA NEEDS YOU. 🚨
Your friends at Black Forest Ultra have some critical volunteer openings for Sunday, October 4 in the PA Wilds, and they need to fill them.
Since most of you here has ran Ironstone or an ultra, you know how much the people on the other side of the aid-station table, out on the course, and behind the scenes matter. These races simply do not happen without volunteers.
And honestly, volunteering is a pretty damn good way to spend a Sunday. You’ll help keep runners safe, meet some great people, get a front-row seat to the suffering, and become part of something memorable.

THE ROCKS ARE WAITING BUT WILL THE RESOLVE?

Tomorrow. September 1st. 2:00 PM.
Registration opens for the 2027 Ironstone 100K.
That’s 44 weeks and 4 days from now. Plenty of time to train. Plenty of time to get your affairs in order.

And yes, it’s the same course.

Because there is something to be said for the unique terror of knowing exactly what torture lies ahead.

July 10–11, 2027.
100K. Same rocks. Same climbs. Same questionable life choices.
See you at 2 PM tomorrow. 🪨 www.ironstone100k.com by @easternstates100

🔥 HEY, IRONSTONERS. PAY ATTENTION. 🔥
Do yourself a favor: head over to the Ironstone website and take a stroll through the 2026 Results & Reports. Relive the glory. Revisit the suffering. Admire the questionable decisions that somehow resulted in 74% of you finishing.
Then lose yourself in the photos from July. Because apparently some of you need photographic evidence that you actually did this.
And while you're there, check out the details for the 6th Ironstone 100K — July 10–11, 2027.

Because here's the important part:
⏰ REGISTRATION OPENS SEPTEMBER 1 AT 2 PM.
Set your clocks. Set your alarms. Set your carrier pigeon.
Set your clocks to ADVENTURE. 🧭
The Class of 2027 is forming, and we'd like to welcome you to the party.

Legs of Iron. Resolve like a Stone.
See you in the mountains. 🪨🔥

Three cheers for one of our Volunteers of the Year and our Trail Boss, George Conrad! 👏👏👏

Fresh off his own race at Ute 100 and at Ironstone since work was done, George Conrad managed to pull in so many volunteer hours that the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources apparently started wondering if he was logging hours for other people.
Nope. It’s all legit. 😂
Known locally as Mr. Trails, George is the president of the Standing Stone Trail Club and also serves in leadership roles with the Mid State Trail Association and Keystone Trails Association. In other words, if there’s a trail somewhere in central Pennsylvania, there’s a pretty good chance George has either worked on it, talked about it, or knows someone who has.
When accepting his award, George modestly put it best:

<<“I don’t do it for the notoriety. I do it for the love of our trails.”>>

And that, folks, is exactly what being a Trail Boss is all about. ❤️🥾🌲
Congratulations, George and thank you for all those miles, hours, sweat, sawdust, trail work and love for the places we get to run. You’re one of the good ones! by @easternstates100

As an added personal touch, I write short messages on every race bib: sarcastic, encouraging, and just hostile enough to feel like Ironstone. They’re for the kind of people who willingly decided to spend 63 miles getting kicked around by rocks, roots, and their own questionable judgment.
I’m concerned about your well-being, but not so concerned that I won’t mock your life choices a little. It’s all in good fun, of course. Just setting the tone for the slightly unhinged weekend you signed up for. by @easternstates100

Some people just can't be pleased.
Case in point: our UPS driver. She delivered 100 cowbells and informed me—in no uncertain terms—that they've been clanging around in the back of her truck for hours. We may have lost a little goodwill with UPS...

But you? You should be thrilled.

The finisher flannels are here! The handcrafted metal finisher awards are in hand. The full-wrap commemorative pint glasses have arrived to chronicle your adventure. We've got Ironstone logo stickers, plus a second variety pack to decorate your laptop, water bottle, cooler... or cover up the emotional scars this course leaves behind. Your participant shirt from our friends at Rox and River Adventure Co are being printed. And because July in Pennsylvania has all the subtlety of a blast furnace, we've even got cooling ice bandanas.
At this point, your swag bag is carrying almost as much weight as you are.
How do we keep giving away all this stuff? We apparently have a psychological condition that compels us to keep saying, "One more thing..."

You're welcome.

Now all you have to do is earn it. by @easternstates100

Hey Ironstoners!
Never been to Ironstone? Do course descriptions, maps and elevation profiles make your eyes glaze over faster than a donut at an aid station?
Then head to the website, click Race Info, and explore four years of race reports, photos, videos, and participant stories. If you want to know what Ironstone really feels like, hear it directly from the runners who have battled the rocks, ridges, heat darkness and existential crisis along the way.
Today we've featuring a 2025 race report from Angela Sterf @angelakeepsrunning on IG. Angela experiences some very low lows, a few hard-earned highs, and ultimately discovered what Ironstone has a way of revealing about all of us.
Read her journey: https://angelasterf.substack.com/p/battling-sickness-embracing-struggle

And when you're done, dive into the rest of our race reports on the website. The trail tells one story. The runners tell the rest. by @easternstates100

Ironstone 100K: Through Stone, Fire, and the Long Memory of a Nation
There are races that test endurance, and there are places that tell stories. The Ironstone 100K does both by tracing a 100-kilometer route from Canoe Creek State Park to Greenwood Furnace State Park through one of the most historically dense corridors in America. https://www.rocksylvania-dispatch.com/post/ironstone-100k-through-stone-fire-and-the-long-memory-of-a-nation by @easternstates100

📣 VOLUNTEER ROLL CALL 📣
Ironstone 100K is just weeks away, and we're looking for the people who make this whole ridiculous enterprise possible.
Want a front-row seat to watch runners question their life choices somewhere between Canoe Creek and Greenwood Furnace? We've got a job for you.

We need volunteers for:
🔸 Aid Stations
🔸 Start & Finish Line Operations
🔸 Course Proofers
🔸 Course Sweepers
🔸 Course Cleanup Crews

Ironstone 100K isn't backed by a giant corporation, a mysterious billionaire, or a committee of highly paid consultants. It's built by runners, hikers, friends, family members, trail stewards, and people who hear "63 miles through the mountains" and think, "I'd like to help with that."
Whether you can spare a few hours or an entire day, we'd love to have you join the team.

Answer the call:
➡️ Click the Volunteer link
➡️ Click the blue Sign Up button

Come help us keep runners moving, spirits high, and the water jugs full.
