Todays features from Sa:gwáyoˀ Gayogo̱hó:nǫˀ/Cayuga People, We Returned explore Gahswga:Ɂ hogyaɁdawíhdǫh and Stone Sculptures.

Gahswga:Ɂ hogyaɁdawíhdǫh, or Stone Giants (literally “Stone Coats”), populate Hodinǫhsǫ́:nih teachings. Some accounts relate that these giants may appear human at first glance and are distinguished by their stony scales and clothes. In these accounts of Gahswga:Ɂ hogyaɁdawíhdǫh, Hodinǫhsǫ́:nih hunters often come face to face with these mighty beings. In such encounters, hunters must rely on their individual ingenuity or their party’s collective talents and wisdom to come out alive—and not all do. Some Gahswga:Ɂ hogyaɁdawíhdǫh perish when hunters remove their scales or set them up to drown. Other Gahswga:Ɂ hogyaɁdawíhdǫh become friends and allies with their Hodinǫhsǫ́:nih neighbors.

Artist Talk, Saturday, July 18 at 1pm. With Mohawk artist Iakonikonriiosta.

Iakonikonriiosta will discuss the significance of the symbols on her quilt

‘Sken:nen Tsiotensawe/A New Beginning ', which is part of the Iroquois Museum’s current exhibition “Talkin’ Bout a Revolution: A Haudenosaunee Response to the 250th”. The quilt depicts the eclipse that was foretold by the Peacemaker as an indicator of the strength of the Great Law of Peace. Established 1000 years ago, the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) Confederacy would come to serve as the basis for the US Constitution drafted in 1787. The US Senate recognized the influence of the Haudenosaunee in a resolution by the Senate on Sept 16, 1987.
