The Ravens - Ceramic, Plaster and Blown Glass

My son, Milo, gave me this amazing and large 7lb glass head he had sculpted at school a couple years ago. The piece reminded me so much of Edgar Allan Poe - that I decided to make a nice base for it as a little collaborative project. I have been thinking about it the past year but finally completed it today. by @irwinopolis

Livia is 25….! ❤️🎂 I can’t believe it’s been 25 years since our beautiful daughter came into this world. Heidi and I had a one bedroom apartment in Beverly Hills. I’m pretty sure she never slept in a crib or her own bed for the first three years. ✨ by @irwinopolis

Start Trek 60 Anniversary

Although I grew up watching the original Star Trek as a kid - I got hooked on Next Generation during college. I used to tape each episode (and pause during commercials). By the end of grad school, I had almost all the episodes on VHS on my bookshelf. When Heidi and I moved to Spain together - I converted some favorite episodes to cassette tapes to listen to while I feel asleep.

There was one episode where Picard asks about Data’s brain - “..Type R?”. Heidi would sit up in bed and repeat that over and over again - to make me laugh. A couple years later a friend introduced us to Bob Picardo as he was coming to Vienna where we were then living. We ended up spending a few wonderful days with his family and having them over to our apartment for Christmas Dinner.

When we moved to LA - Bob helped us out immensely with job connections for both Heidi and I. I brought my portfolio to Paramount at his request - and he proceeded to introduce me to several Production Designers in film and television. We spent a lot of time on that lot with him - watching him film Voyager episodes.

He is one of those people who inspired us to help people out in LA – because he was just so good to us and made a lot of things possible. Thirty years later we are still great friends. I remember during Obama’s presidency – it felt like the world was getting to be bit more like Star Trek. It felt like we were part of a shared goal across the world of doing good things in the world and making it better.

Strange and very different times now of course – but happy 60Th Anniversary – the world is so much better with Start Trek in it. ❤️ @robert_picardo @heidiology_la #startrek #sttng #startrekvoyager by @irwinopolis

It’s a New Deck...!

I dare you to make fun of my inflatable salt-water spa. I spent the past 2 weekends getting this area ready next to my Studio space. I did have the electrical done by professionals since I added both a 120 and 240 outlet in case we ever upgrade or change to a sauna. I may do 120 wiring but I don’t ever dick around with electrical panels or 240v systems.

Since I always get messages about cost and time - here is the breakdown:

Redwood 2x4 Structure - 375 (it would have been 200 last year before the tariff bullshit)
Cedar Fence and Decking- 225
Lights and Wiring - 150
200 lbs of Concrete Posts - 45 (concrete is still so cheap luckily)
Simpsons Connectors and Screws - 140
Electrical panel upgrade and 40 foot connection - 2k
Spa (Intex from Amazon) - 550
Irwin’s Labor - Priceless (but ~36 hours in total)

Did I use a Fibonacci sequence? - Yes, always 1,3,5 if you look closely at the fence spacing. Each board is ripped 3 times and cut 2x so there are around 650 cuts in total

Is there a name for this cladding style? - Yes, "Irwin Ingalls" as it emulates the home of the Ingalls Family on Little House on the Prairie taken in Beverly Glen, Los Angeles by @irwinopolis

The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art

That was a treat on a rainy LA Sunday - we went to a member's preview of the new Lucas Museum and it did not disappoint. It may be one of my new favorite LA Museums. Wonderful and diverse collection with a central theme of storytelling. Great to see some favorite original works by Hockney, Sendak, Parrish and others. The Star Wars special exhibit was awesome - seeing the original Ralph McQuarrie paintings and the original miniature models up close was so inspiring.

Make sure you get there soon and give yourself a couple of hours at least as the collection goes on and on. Thank you George Lucas for giving LA this new little gift in our backyard. Also - great architecture (that we usually don't get in the US) and fantastic staff which says a lot about any institution.

Two Porcelain Rockets - Porcelain, brass and hand-blown glass, 2026

This started as an idea when I was gifted a hand-blown rocket flame earlier this year by my buddy and fellow (class of 93) RISD alum - the brilliant glass artist @davidwaltersglass . I told him I would do “something” with the flame 🔥 . Helsinki Flow Fest last night with Florence and the Machine as the closer. My first festival and this is the way to do it. I was way underdressed for this crowd - really the most wonderful people here in Finland - and the best people watching. Florence was simply amazing - she is a Goddess 🔥❤️✨

I’m still not sure how this took two weekends and 20+ hours, but I have renovated our cute little pantry in the kitchen. We have a NYC apartment size kitchen at 90 square feet - so every little bit of space counts. I have learned that I will never strip and paint 50 year old shutter doors again 💛 by @irwinopolis
