🎉 AB 1655 has been signed into law!

This critical new law helps ensure children and families can continue receiving CalWORKs cash assistance when a family member is unlawfully detained in federal immigration detention.

Families deserve stability, dignity, and protection, not punishment.

Thank you to the sponsors who fought for California’s children and families: @seiuca, and @ccwro And thank you to everyone who helped make this victory possible!

This is what it looks like when we stand up for children and families.

BREAKING -- This just in: @cagovernor signs AB 1645 and AB 1646, 2 pieces of legislation that will allow families and loved ones who are incarcerated to hug during visitation.

Physical touch is more than a kind gesture; it’s human-to-human connection with your loved ones.

Governor Newsom signed AB 1661, delivering economic compensation to frontline communities in South LA!

This win didn’t come from one decision or one person. It came from a movement.

Alongside our partners at Black Women for Wellness (@bw4wla), we organized, testified, knocked on doors, and showed up again and again because the people living closest to the oil field deserve to be heard.

Thank you to Assemblymember Isaac Bryan (@isaacbryan) for carrying this bill, and to Supervisor Holly Mitchell (@hollyjmitchell) and her office for continuing to champion environmental justice in her district and advocate for the communities surrounding the Inglewood Oil Field.

And thank you to every neighbor, family member, organizer, and advocate who shared their story and refused to be ignored.

When communities lead, change follows. This is what people power looks like, and we did it together.

This is a victory worth celebrating, and the work continues. ✊🏽 by @isaacgbryan

A hug sparked a movement. The youth made history. 💜

Thank you to Assemblymember Isaac Bryan for honoring #Hoops4Justice following the passage of the #HugAct (AB 1647), a bill inspired directly by the youth in our mentorship program at #LosPadrinos Juvenile Hall.

What began with incarcerated youth simply wanting to hug their loved ones grew into a movement—from sharing their stories to traveling to Sacramento to advocate for change. Today, we can proudly say: We did it! ✊🏾

I’m humbled to be part of this historic moment. Salute to the youth who spoke up and everyone who helped turn their vision into law. 🏀⚖️ taken in Los Angeles, California by @isaacgbryan

A hug holds more than a person. It holds love, hope, and the strength to keep going. 🫂⚖️❤️

California has signed the #HugAct (AB 1646) into law, recognizing a right incarcerated youth should have had all along: the right to embrace their loved ones during visitation. 🌴

On Monday, we gathered at @LARoomAndBoard’s less restrictive placement (LRP) in Echo Park to celebrate this milestone — and the young people, families, and advocates who made it possible. 📈

For us at #Hoops4Justice, this victory is especially meaningful. The inspiration behind the Hug Act came directly from incarcerated youth in our mentoring program at #LosPadrinos Juvenile Hall. Their request was simple: let us hug our loved ones. 🏀🧠

Their voices helped turn that request into California law. 🗣️

Special thanks to Assemblymember #IsaacBryan (@ib2_real) for listening to the youth, honoring his commitment, and authoring legislation that carried their concerns from Los Padrinos to the State Capitol. ✊🏾

Thank you to formerly incarcerated youth John John and Lawrence for sharing their experiences and testifying before public safety committees in Sacramento. Their advocacy helped move this legislation forward, and the California Assembly recognized their efforts with plaques. 💪🏆

A heartfelt thank-you to our colleague Olivia Shields of the #UrbanPeaceInstitute, whose persistence helped make this connection possible. By encouraging Bryan to visit the juvenile halls, she helped bring him face-to-face with the young people whose futures he was advocating for. 🖤

To every family, community organization, leader, legislator, and ally who stood alongside the youth: thank you. This victory reflects the power of a community that listens to its young people and acts on what they have to say. 🙏

Youth experiencing incarceration still need affection, connection, and reassurance from the people they love. A hug can remind them that they are supported, that they matter, and that they have something to keep moving forward for. Every young person deserves to feel the embrace of someone who believes in them. ❤️🧡

AB 1646, the HUG Act, authored by Assemblymember Isaac G. Bryan, has officially been signed into law. This new law protects consensual hugs and hand-holding during visits for young people in juvenile facilities, recognizing the importance of connection, care, and family bonds.

Families are sacred, and we’re celebrating the people who organized, spoke up, and helped make this form of healing a reality. We applaud California Black Power Network, The Alliance for Reparations, Reconciliation, & Truth (ARRT), LA Voice, Faith in the Valley, Faith In Action East Bay on every effort.

This is a major win for Californians!
