Before Coward even hit the cameras, Lukas showed us a book during our very first meeting. It documented the real-life soldier revues — moments where men turned to theater and performance just to survive the psychological horror of the trenches. 🎭🪖

We wanted to closely link the brutal reality of the war with the vibrant spirit of these revues. For us, the ultimate symbol became the sandbags.

During rehearsals led by choreographer Nora Monsecour, we spent hours exploring how this rough, heavy fabric could literally come to life. Sandbags are meant for defense and dirt, but through movement, we transformed them into costumes, props, and art.

It became a motif that returns constantly throughout the film—a testament to pure creative resourcefulness under extreme limitations. It shows how humanity can turn the literal walls of a battlefield into raw creativity when they have absolutely nothing else left.

Plaisir d’Amour ( pt 1 )

One of the costumes I became really attached to was Francis’s parachute dress for Plaisir d’Amour. ( yes, I cried several times)

We spent a month from finding the parachute to completing the dress. We only had one parachute, so there was absolutely no second chance. It was quite nerve-racking :). We cut the parachute metre by metre, fitting by fitting, making sure every detail was right before moving forward.

The bows were a deliberate design choice, inspired by the decorative ribbons of 18th century French fashion and Dior’s romantic couture aesthetic.

For the attentive eye: the parachute fabric also reappears in the ruffles of the bodice and in Francis’s headscarf.

This dress wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible hard work and craftsmanship of our sewing atelier, led by Jasmien Van Loo. A huge shout out to the entire team for bringing these ideas to life. 🤍🪂

Plaisir d’Amour ( pt 2 )

Here you see the performers’ look for Plaisir d’Amour.

The skirt was inspired by the can-can and made from canvas tent fabric ( thank you Eve Martin!).

The top is a woven harnass made from soldiers’ puttees - the long stripes of fabric used to wrap around their lower legs as part of their military uniform.
By reworking this functional piece of military clothing into a theatrical costume, we kept the connection to the soldiers’ wartime reality present, even in the world of the revue.

During fittings, I loved asking the performers to dance in their costumes - the perfect test to see how the looks moved and wether they could keep up with Nora’s choreography.

We were still searching for the perfect headwear, eventually we chose the scarf to soften the look and add a more feminine touch.

I decided to take my Canon Prima Zoom 76 and capture every step of COWARD.

Every week, I developed my rolls at Laboriver and shared the results with everyone involved. These images became a little source of courage, love and energy - a reminder to keep going , keep dreaming and keep pushing for the best.

These two pictures are from our very first day of shooting. The very beginning of a journey that would become so much more than I could have imagined.
