For @rickrubin ‘s @tetragrammaton.now I wrote a short essay on losing control of our gestures (link in bio).
The site - described as a living mood board - is updated daily with things to read, watch, listen and look at spanning archeology, philosophy, astrology, and more. And I’ll be contributing occasional texts on gesture 🫶 by @isabellebucklow

I had a ridiculous amount of fun writing about tech demos for the new issue of Real Review.

Last year I became obsessed with watching tech demos (hours and hours of them) — utterly absurd, performative, cringe, disturbing, I thought that in order to shake this unhealthy fascination I’d have to do some analysis. In my essay I trace the history and mechanisms of the demo looking at the emergence of scientific demonstrations in the 17th century, the shift from experimentation to demonstration and its spatial correlates, and the need for demonstration to assure public assent. In the 19th c, Edison’s showmanship brought technological demonstration into the arena of entertainment, and today, demos disavow any of sleight of hand whilst nonetheless employing techniques of magic and entertainment to distract and engineer consent. 🤡

Thank you to @j_self for chatting through these ideas, and the brilliant @maddyweavers xx by @isabellebucklow

I interviewed Juliette Binoche! for A Rabbit’s Foot!
Ahead of the uk premiere of her directorial debut ‘In-I In Motion’ I spoke to the legendary actress about her foray into dance, and directing. She was warm and generous with great anecdotes including Robert Redford bursting into her dressing room, and having visions of Pina Bausch when on a massage table.

Thank you to @kittygrady for the edits xx

P.s a week before the interview I’d taken a picture of Juliette in Damage and Three Colours Blue to the hairdresser and I wonder if she could tell :) by @isabellebucklow

For @textezurkunst Anonymity issue I wrote about masks and masking, multiplicity and madness. With Joyce Suechen Cheng’s ‘The Persistence of Masks’ (University of Minnesota Press, 2025) as my guide, the piece positions surrealism as para-ethnographic and masquerade(in the field/ in life) as means to destabilise the sovereign self. 🤡 Cheng’s book has incredible case studies across anthropology and art - reorienting those already well trodden and expertly embedding others to topple Surrealism’s western hegemony

It was such an honour to be asked to reflect on the work of Simone Forti for @ocula.art . I received the commission when I was in Venice. It was the final weekend of the dance biennale – I attended performances by Adam Linder and Eiko Otake and Wen Hui, visited Florentina Holzinger at her pavilion, watched turtles swim in a fountain, and all the time thought about Simone. Everything I saw brought me back to her, confirming, as I think I always knew, her pioneering foresight. Political, compassionate and spirited - nobody did it better 🤍🤍🤍

Thank you @benson_louise for thinking of me and @bayasimons for your edits x by @isabellebucklow

I spoke to the queen of fools Pat Oleszko for World of Interiors (whorl of inferiors). It is a big year for Pat who had a stellar show at SculptureCenter earlier this year (her first solo show in a NY institution in over 35 yrs) and only yesterday was announced the recipient of the Whitney Biennial’s Bucksbaum award. All long overdue!
I love pats work, and I love puns and puppets, so it was a dream conversation and so special to see Pat’s pad shot by @tinatyrell xxx

Marianna Simnett’s “Circus” documents the theatrical, exhausting, and physically risky performances of an artist who sets out to discomfort her audience. What elevates these works above shock tactics, writes Isabelle Bucklow, is their connection to history and their enduring impact on viewers.

Read at the link in bio.

The most special commission to write the essay for the first ever publication of the work of L0lita Danse.

Active in Paris in the 1980s, L0lita Danse was a collective of ten artists who rejected hierarchy and fixity. Influenced by the revolutionary spirit of post-1968 France and the multidisciplinary vision of American choreographer (and once puppeteer) Alwin Nikolais, L0lita Danse fused dance, music, light, set and costume in one dazzling experiment of democratic,
dialectical -and diabolical- decentralisation.

@mestiza_estudio uncovered L0lita’s archives a couple of years ago, and last year I had the joy of researching and writing a text on the histories and legacies of this collective (touching on socialist dance collectives, soviet montage, laughter and clowns). The book brings together L0lita’s notebooks, letters,
photographs, film stills and more. It is so beautiful and you can order via @messmessmessmess

Thank you to @monichiiwa for bringing me on board, and the unparalleled editorship of @manon_lutanie xx by @isabellebucklow

For AnOther’s 50th edition magazine I spoke to choreographer Florentina Holzinger about her collaboration and friendship with the late dancer and artist Trixie Cordua (infamously known as the ‘naked ballerina’ after she performed a 1972 version of Rite of Spring nude).

It was incredible to hear from Florentina about Trixie’s life and work, with far too many scandalous, devious and iconic anecdotes impossible to relay in such a small word count- but happy that the hospitalisation after masturbating in her eighties got in there 😈😈 by @isabellebucklow
