🥂Opening reception: Friday, November 13, 6–9pm
⏰Open Hours: Saturday, November 14, 1–6pm
📍1040 Metropolitan Ave, Brooklyn

The International Studio & Curatorial Program (ISCP) presents ‘The Skin of the Earth Is Seamless,’ a group exhibition bringing together eight artists—Seba Calfuqueo, Magdalena Ciemierkiewicz, Verónica Gaona, Gi (Ginny) Huo, Simon Liu, Brenda Mallory, Kara Springer, and Nardeen Srouji—who approach borders from distinct geographic, cultural, and historical positions. Rather than representing them primarily as geopolitical lines, the artists focus on what happens around and across them: what is interrupted, what endures, and what is transformed or remade.

Join us for the opening reception on Tuesday, October 27 from 6–8pm.

The exhibition takes its title from Gloria Anzaldúa’s seminal book ‘Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza’ (1987), in which her understanding of borderlands extends beyond geography to encompass cultural, linguistic, psychological, and spiritual experiences. At a moment of intensified nationalism, forced displacement, and increasingly restrictive border regimes, the exhibition asks not only what borders divide, but what moves through them, endures despite them, and connects across them. The works consider repair not as an erasure of rupture, but as an ongoing practice of adaptation and resistance.

‘The Skin of the Earth Is Seamless’ is accompanied by an illustrated catalogue featuring an essay by Melinda Lang, ISCP’s Director of Programs and Exhibitions, and a resource bibliography by Nicolas Poblete, Programs and Exhibitions Intern.

Who are we? What is ISCP?

To celebrate the milestone of reaching 20,000+ followers on Instagram, we'd like to take a trip down memory lane and highlight ISCP's history!

ISCP was founded in 1994 by Dennis Elliott as the International Studio Program, with the goal of establishing an international community of artists in New York City and assisting them in developing their professional careers. The program was expanded to include curatorial residencies in 1999, and the institution was renamed the International Studio & Curatorial Program. In 2009 ISCP moved from midtown Manhattan to East Williamsburg, Brooklyn, where we are now! This relocation increased ISCP's facilities and activities to include 35 private studios, exhibition, and project spaces. Over 1,800 artists and curators from more than 90 countries have undertaken residencies at ISCP.

ISCP also organizes free and open-to-the-public exhibitions, offsite projects and talks hosted in partnership with other arts organizations in Brooklyn and New York City! Thelma Golden, David Zwirner, and Marcia Tucker were among the art professionals who joined us in the early years of ISCP's development. Today, ISCP is New York’s most comprehensive visual arts residency program, and one of the largest in the world.

We look forward to a future of supporting and enhancing the professional development of emerging to mid-career artists and curators from around the world and introducing New York audiences to exceptional international art practices ✨

Presented in a series of photographs, Verónica Gaona’s ‘For Those Who Do Not Return in Life, There Is Always Death (Homage to David Gomez)’ uses the materials and rituals surrounding trucks to explore death, memory, and return. A truck adorned with funeral flowers enacts a ritual inspired by Mexican vigils, its spinning tires inscribing circular marks onto the road.

In another work on view, ‘Untitled (Elijah),’ from ‘Sentir un consuelo aunque sea del suelo (To Feel Comfort, Even If It’s from the Ground)’ (2026), a truck-bed liner becomes a provisional memorial, adorned with artificial funerary flowers and candle wax pooling like spilled blood. Together, these works evoke the possibility of dying far from one’s place of origin and the longing to return. The truck embodies this tension, carrying ties to family and place across borders while evoking the distances and absences they produce.

Texas-based artist Verónica Gaona (@vero.gaona.art) draws on her upbringing along the U.S.–Mexico border to explore the connections between migration, labor, architecture, and economic systems. Working with salvaged truck parts, building materials, glass, and industrial remnants, she examines the infrastructures through which people, goods, and capital move. Across sculpture, installation, photography, and performance, Gaona approaches diaspora as an ongoing social practice rooted in relationships to land and ritual, while bearing witness to the failures of capitalism and immigration policy.

Last month, ISCP and @newtowncreek hosted a walking tour in conjunction with our exhibition 'Hans Rosenström: Conspirare' 💦🌱 Over the 2.5-mile round-trip route, Restoration and Marine Projects Coordinator Gus Perry guided participants from the industrial waterfront of Newtown Creek to Plank Road, offering an up-close look at one of New York City’s most environmentally complex landscapes and the ways it informed Rosenström’s site-specific installation.

A huge thank you to Gus Perry for leading the tour and to everyone who joined us! by @iscp_nyc

Featured in our upcoming exhibition ‘The Skin of the Earth Is Seamless,’ Simon Liu’s film ‘Let’s Talk’ (2023) considers how the shifting political and territorial realities in his hometown of Hong Kong shape personal memory, identity, and anxieties about an uncertain future. Through abstraction and rapid montage, the city appears in fragments that collide, disappear, and return. Liu’s film echoes the exhibition’s exploration of borders as lived conditions, embedded in everyday spaces and experiences.

Born in Hong Kong and based in Brooklyn, @cyi_liu works across short films, multichannel video, mixed-media prints, and 16mm projection. His work has been exhibited at the Whitney Museum of American Art; The Museum of Modern Art, and The Shed in New York; MOCA Los Angeles; and the Moderna Museet, Stockholm, and has presented at festivals including TIFF and Sundance.

“I started making work that is more of an experience and relates to the viewer’s body instead of trying to relate to the space.” — Hans Rosenström for BOMB Magazine

Thank you to @annabelfkeenan and @bombmag for this wonderful, in-depth interview with @hans.rosenstrom about ‘Conspirare’ and the ideas behind it.

This is the final week to view the exhibition at ISCP, come check it out before it closes ✨
