Even though my daughter's reactions are not what I expected lol, this beautiful detail from Dori Robert Stewart @dori.roberts.stewart, FXBG Neighbors @fxbgneighbors and the Stafford Living magazine staff really melted me. I can't express how grateful I am for them to highlight the work of an organization rooted not only in rhythm, but also in ancestral traditions and its preservation. Semilla Cultural @semillacultural has given my life an unexpected twist in the past 12 years, and I am so thankful for those that are able to recognize the effort our team puts in. An effort filled with love and a cultural mission that goes beyond what can be seen. Our team and their dedication has helped create a regional movement, and we are glad to be part of it. En marzo recibí una llamada del Municipio Autónomo de Caguas @caguasgovpr preguntándome si podían adaptar Sofía y su Tambor de Bomba a una obra con su Teatro de Títeres para niñxs durante su Feria Anual del Libro, lo cual me sacó una enorme sonrisa. Jamás imaginé que un cuento que escribí para conectar a los niñxs con la cultura puertorriqueña algún día cobraría vida sobre un escenario, y en Puerto Rico.

En abril tuve el privilegio de ver ese sueño hacerse realidad. Ver a Sofía salir de las páginas de un libro y convertirse en una obra de teatro fue un momento profundamente emocionante. El amor, la creatividad y el cuidado que se reflejaron en esta producción fueron evidentes en cada detalle.

Mi más sincero agradecimiento al Municipio Autónomo de Caguas y su Departmento de Desarrollo Cultural, al Teatro de Títeres, al elenco, y muy especialmente a Paula y sus padres por dar vida a Sofía con tanto cariño. 💛

También fue muy especial poder compartir este momento con mis padres, mis amigos Tamil y Danny, y mi suegra, quienes estuvieron allí para compartir conmigo este hermoso momento. Esto es una experiencia que siempre guardaré en mi corazón.

Cuando escribí Sofía y su Tambor de Bomba, mi deseo era sembrar una semilla cultural en los niños. Ver cómo esa semilla sigue germinando de formas que nunca imaginé es uno de los regalos más grandes que me ha dado este proyecto.

¡Gracias, Caguas, por creer en Sofía y por permitirle seguir inspirando a nuevas generaciones a través del teatro! 🌱🇵🇷🪘📚

Normalmente no hago este tipo de publicaciones, pero ver a mis dos hijas, nacidas en la diáspora boricua, tan emocionadas armando este hermoso rompecabezas de @thatisso_crafty me tiene derretida. ❤️🇵🇷

Además de entretenerse, están aprendiendo la geografía de Puerto Rico y me encanta escucharlas esforzarse por pronunciar los nombres de nuestros pueblos. Son esos pequeños momentos los que ayudan a fortalecer su conexión con sus raíces. ¿Se acuerdan cuando nos hacían memorizar los 78 municipios en la clase de Historia? Y ellas haciéndolo voluntariamente mientras "juegan" 🥰🤭

También aproveché para llevarme algunas de sus hermosas decoraciones culturales para mi oficina. ¡Mira que lindas! Si aún no conocen su trabajo, pasen por la página de @thatisso_crafty y apoyen a esta familia de Morovis que, con tanto cariño, crea piezas que nos acercan visual y geográficamente a Puerto Rico, sin importar dónde vivamos. 🌴🧩🇵🇷

What an incredible day at the Smithsonian! 🌱🇵🇷🪘📚 Last April we had the honor of opening the ¡Puro Ritmo! The Musical Journey of Salsa exhibition at the @uslatinomuseum with a special Sofía y su Tambor de Bomba storytime, followed by an interactive Bomba workshop and toque for children, families, and the staff of the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Latino. It was a joyful celebration of Puerto Rican culture, music, and storytelling.

Thank you to the Smithsonian for this unforgettable opportunity and to everyone who joined us in the Learning Lounge to start the day with so much rhythm and joy!

¡Qué día tan brutal pasamos en el Smithsonian! 🌱🇵🇷🪘📚 El pasado mes de abril tuvimos el honor de inaugurar la exhibición ¡Puro Ritmo! Ayer terminé de leer el libro Bailando Al Son De Las Regiones Bomberas de Jeanitza Avilés Calderón... ¡y me lo leí en dos días!

Quiero felicitar a Jeanitza @avilesjeanitza por crear un recurso tan necesario para nuestra comunidad. Desde la diáspora, muchas veces enfrentamos el reto de enseñar Bomba sin tener siempre a nuestros mayores y maestras/os cerca. Contar con este tipo de materiales fundamentados, accesibles y bien documentados hace una gran diferencia para quienes asumimos la responsabilidad de educar.

Me encantó cómo presenta el contexto histórico de la Bomba dentro del currículo de Bellas Artes, los elementos del baile, la información sobre las regiones bomberas, los visuales que ilustran las posiciones y movimientos con las onomatopeyas y el código QR con recursos adicionales. Es evidente el cuidado y la intención pedagógica detrás de cada capítulo.

Este libro será una referencia importante para continuar fortaleciendo y enriqueciendo el currículo educativo que desarrollamos para Semilla Cultural.

Exhorto a los educadores de Bomba de tener este libro como recurso. Es una herramienta que aporta al fundamento, la reflexión y la preservación de nuestra tradición de una manera fundamentada y estructurada.

Today I finished reading Protect the House by my dear friend Dr. Jamese Sims @jd_sims, and I highly recommend it.

What I appreciated most is how it brings to the forefront the weather and climate experiences of Black and Brown communities. Perspectives that are too often missing from scientific conversations. As a Puerto Rican, many of the stories and themes resonated deeply with my own experiences living through hurricanes in Puerto Rico and witnessing the challenges of preparedness, response, and recovery.

This book goes beyond the typical advice of food, water, and batteries. It encourages readers to think about the people, resources, relationships, paperwork, plans and uncomfortable conversations that help communities weather a storm and recover afterward. It is filled with thoughtful questions and practical considerations that everyone should be asking as we face a changing climate.

This is a timely, important, and necessary read that also inspired me. Thank you Jamese for this gift!

In March, Semilla Cultural was honored to support Mpower Her @m_power.her, a fundraising event dedicated to helping women affected by abuse.

Through this Bomba workshop, we shared culture, music, movement, and community while contributing to a meaningful cause. We are grateful to the organizers, participants, and supporters who made this event possible.
