Huge thanks to my buddy Gord from @ssibjj for letting me take his jetski out this weekend. Spending a couple of hours out on the water adds a whole new dimension to my ability to recharge and continue to recover from the severe burnout that hit me last year.Time spent fully at peace, away from the demands of running a business, is something I definitely need way more of. Always stoked to see Ryan, who has traveled to train with us regularly over the last few years, but this is the first time seeing his wife Nancy on the mats with us. I'm told this was also her first time training anywhere outside of her home club, so it's extra cool that she enjoyed the gi class so much she joined us for a nogi session as well.We have a really awesome group of regular visitors here, none better or more supportive of my work than this guy.It means a lot to me when people trust me with their jiu-jitsu having never met me and only being familiar with me through my online presence. I do my best to live up to their expectations when we finally meet in person, partially because that's just who I am, but also because there are so many people out there who misrepresent themselves, both online and in person. I would like to contribute to a higher standard of authenticity. One of the best compliments I ever received came after a private class I did in Calgary years ago, the guy said "you are exactly the person I thought you'd be from watching your videos". Seems that's not typically the case in our industry. Trying to "be yourself" can be difficult though if you don't receive strong support for who you are. Having people like Ryan support my efforts in this business, many of which are not great from a business perspective, but optimized to share my passion for JiuJitsu with other people similarly inclined, really does make my life better, so I am truly grateful to him, and everyone that supports my work, for that.#islandtopteam #bjj #bjjlife #bjjlifestyle #sharejiujitsu by @islandtopteam

Monday night, in round 1, Brodie swept me, passed me, took my back and eventually choked me. When he started training with us regularly a year and a half ago, I would get the better of him in almost every round. 6 months later he started taking rounds off me, but only if I was still warming up, and he never submitted me.Over the last few months he has typically gotten a good first round, and then I have come back with a good second round.However, on Monday night, in round 2, he swept me, passed me, took my back and choked me. Again. He has submitted me more in the last few weeks than in the entire time we have trained together prior to that.I had missed the last couple of weeks of training due to travel and a seized back muscle, so after round 2 was over, I really felt done. I wanted to call it a night, regroup, then try to be a better challenge next week.But I didn't. I asked for another round. I swept and nearly passed, he swept back and put some heat on my guard, but not enough to get close to a pass.It's been a long time since I have had to mentally recover after a round in training like I did after that second round on Monday. I don't care about "losing" in training, but I do care about being an effective and challenging training partner for my athletes. This is especially true for the top few who really only get put in tough spots and submitted by me right now. I don't want to fall behind. But I will, that is inevitable. As I get older and my athletes continue to improve, in time, it will happen more and more. I hate this timeline. Ian just lost his battle with cancer. Ever since he told me about his diagnosis I was hoping for a longshot, or failing that, a longer battle.He was so matter of fact and positive about the time he had left. Even with what he was going through he still showed up to the Prime events to help ensure things ran smoothly. Every time we spoke in person I would give him a hug, and just be blown away by the dignity and kindness he carried himself with.I wish I could hug him one more time. I wish everyone that has lost someone they love to this could have one more moment to share.Fuck cancer. #islandtopteam #bjj #bjjlife #bjjlifestyle #fuckcancer by @islandtopteam

Welcome Jess and everyone from @thirdwayjiujitsu to our affiliate network! Given how much pain I'm in from a seized muscle/nerve in my back, this could have been an absolutely miserable experience. However, Jess's hospitality...picking us up in Colorado, sharing his home and academy with us, as well as giving me a platform to share my approach to jiu-jitsu with his students, has made this a trip I will remember very fondly. Having this final stop on my tour be attended by the hosts of the previous 2 stops; @fulcrumjiujitsumuaythaiacademy and @golden_jiujitsu made it significantly more special. Evan, Monica and Avery truly make these visits feel nothing like work and just like visiting old friends. New friends, old friends, good people, and sharing Jiu-Jitsu. Great details on passing, guard retention, and transitioning from defensive to offensive cycles!If you’re a Jiu Jitsu coach, no explanation needed on the Fanny pack!And great work on the wins by @taylor_christine_mantia and @charlizemiah ! @kaysonc.parker and @the_joshua.parker did some amazing Jiu Jitsu tonight too!
