Members of SPNH-17, a union representing officers of the Haitian National Police (PNH), are demanding salary increases, improved working conditions, debit cards and life insurance benefits.

According to union representatives, police officers have gone 10 years without a salary increase, with some earning approximately 30,000 Haitian gourdes, equivalent to roughly $200 USD per month.

The demands come as officers continue to confront heavily armed gangs, placing their lives at risk amid Haiti’s ongoing security crisis.

Speaking on Jounal 509, SPNH-17 representative Etienne Louisseul France highlighted the growing concerns over compensation and financial protections for those serving on the front lines.

As Haiti relies on its police force to restore security, the union is raising a critical question: Are the officers tasked with protecting the nation receiving the support they deserve?

King Charles III is not expected to issue a formal apology for Britain’s role in the transatlantic slave trade during his upcoming Caribbean tour, according to Buckingham Palace.

The announcement comes amid growing demands for reparations from Caribbean nations, including Jamaica and Barbados, seeking accountability for the lasting impact of slavery and colonialism.

While Charles previously described slavery as an “appalling atrocity” that “forever stains our history,” the British government continues to oppose financial reparations.

As Commonwealth leaders prepare to meet in Antigua and Barbuda, the debate over historical responsibility remains unresolved.

Should Britain formally apologize and provide reparations to Caribbean nations?

A modern healthcare facility in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, is drawing attention for its investment in medical technology, sustainable infrastructure, and patient care.

Located in Canapé-Vert, Centre Hospitalier MedCenter (CHM) features a three-story facility designed to operate entirely on solar energy, with on-site medical oxygen production, digital patient management systems, and 24-hour emergency services.

The development comes at a critical time for Haiti, where ongoing insecurity, infrastructure challenges, and limited access to medical services continue to strain the country’s healthcare system.

While the hospital’s official opening date and full operational capacity have yet to be independently confirmed, the facility highlights efforts to strengthen Haiti’s healthcare infrastructure.

Haiti has indefinitely postponed its long-awaited presidential and legislative elections, extending a political transition in a country that has not held national elections since 2016.

The Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) announced the decision on October 6, suspending plans for a first round of voting on December 13, 2026, and a second round on February 21, 2027. No new election dates have been announced.

The postponement comes amid escalating gang violence, widespread displacement and political instability. Armed groups continue to control significant portions of Port-au-Prince, complicating efforts to organize a secure and credible electoral process.

Haiti has been without an elected president since the assassination of Jovenel Moïse in July 2021 and remains without a functioning elected national legislature.

As the country approaches a decade without national elections, the latest delay raises further questions about the timeline for restoring elected leadership and constitutional governance.

What will it take for Haiti to hold credible and secure elections?
