Student Spotlight 🙌 📣 Meet Mia Rafael, a junior in civil engineering. She is a department student ambassador, peer mentor for CE 1200: Civil Engineering Learning Community, the vice president of Iowa State’s Habitat for Humanity Student Chapter, and a member of Women in Science and Engineering (WiSE). We asked her a few questions about her civil engineering experience so far:
What is an impactful hands-on learning experience you’ve had so far?

“Taking geomatics (CE 1110) was a treat this semester! I gained experience with total stations and leveling. Technically, I learned how to collect site details, calculate and analyze results, and operate the instruments. Also, I have learned that I love having a balance of working outside and indoors, and it has been fun working in teams during the lab time.”

Student Spotlight 🙌 📣 Meet Delaney Anderson, a junior in construction engineering! We asked her a few questions about her experience in the construction program so far:

Why construction engineering?

“In my high school’s building trades and woodworking program, I really enjoyed the hands-on work and the satisfaction of creating something tangible. When I learned about Iowa State’s construction engineering program, I saw it as an opportunity to build on that experience and work on a larger scale in an industry I have grown to love.”

The fourth annual FRESHwater program is this week, bringing Iowa high school students to Iowa State’s campus. These students are learning about the water/wastewater field, performing experiments in the lab, touring treatment plants, visiting consulting firms, and envisioning careers for themselves in the water/wastewater field!

On Tuesday, we welcomed teachers to the FRESHwater program for the first time, connecting educators with curriculum resources and ideas around water. They also toured CCEE labs, Ames Water Treatment Plant and Strand Associates, Inc., talking with water professionals.
