POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Hello ITEA Community,

ITEC 2027 is on the horizon! We are thrilled to gather at Oklahoma State University this coming June 13–17, 2027.

Our theme for ITEC 2027 is "New Beginnings." We are excited to see how our community is innovating and looking toward the future of low brass. To help spark your creativity, here are a few examples of proposal ideas that align with this year's vision:

Presentation: "The Modern Studio: Harnessing Interactive Platforms, Gamification, and AI in Low Brass Education"
Discussion Panel: "Rethinking the Curriculum: Preparing Low Brass Players for a Diversified Career"
Chamber: "The Interactive Ensemble: Breaking the Fourth Wall in Chamber Music"
Solo: "The Time-Travel Recital: Standard Concertos Reimagined through American Popular Music"

It is with great pleasure that I announce the proposal submission window is now open and will run through November 15, 2026 (11:59PM U.S. Central Time Zone). We encourage you to share the links and QR codes below with your colleagues, friends, and across your social media channels to help us spread the word.

We are using a new platform this year called PheedLoop for all submissions. If you run into any issues navigating the new system or have any questions about your application, please feel free to reach out to me directly at cvivio@iteaonline.org. I will assist in any way I can.

I look forward to seeing the incredible ideas and performances you all bring to the conference!

Best regards,
Chris Vivio

ITEA members! A new book has been released about Cora Youngblood Corson. If you don’t know who she is, keep reading:

Vaudeville’s Wildflower uncovers the extraordinary story of one of early twentieth-century America’s most dynamic and overlooked entertainers. Drawing on rare archives, family records, and vivid period accounts, James P. Gregory Jr. restores Cora Youngblood Corson—a trailblazing brass musician, bandleader, and vaudeville performer—to her rightful place in performing arts history. This richly detailed biography showcases a woman who transformed obstacles into opportunities by challenging the gender, ethnic, and cultural boundaries of her time.

If you’re interested, you can purchase the book on Amazon. “Vaudeville's Wildflower
The Many Lives of Cora Youngblood Corson” by James P. Gregory Jr. by @iteaonline

🔔 ALL NEW: ITEA Mentorship Project 🔔

The purpose of the program is to expand educational and training opportunities to eligible ITEA members through virtual access to professional musicians and artists. The goal of the program is to “bridge the gap” for members who lack resources and/or access to educational opportunities that can advance their musical goals and educational aspirations.

Program participants will meet virtually 3-4 times a year with paired ITEA mentors. These meetings can vary widely from playing lessons to career advice sessions and other possibilities. ITEA mentors are volunteering their time to be a part of the program, and no compensation is being provided or collected from any participants.

Apply to be a mentor or mentee using the links in our story highlight!

Our featured member for the month of October is internationally recognized educator and performer, Dr. Chris Dickey. Dickey is currently the Chair of the Department of Music at the University of Texas at El Paso having moved from a 15-year tenure at Washington State University. Their original position at WSU was as instructor of tuba and euphonium building a successful studio with students participating in competitions and auditions across all levels. Over time, they added a number of administrative duties, culminating in serving as the Director of the David G. Pollart Center for Arts and Humanities and as Music Graduate Studies Coordinator. In the professional sphere, Dr. Dickey is an active performer and clinician with examples of their professional activity including a featured recital at the upcoming Canadian Regional Conference or their recent regional presentation and performance at SERTEC. Their output also extends into the chamber world as the tubist for the internationally recognized and acclaimed Mirari Brass Quintet. When away from their many musical commitments, they enjoy spending time as an avid home chef and baker. They note that their favorite hobbies besides cooking include reading, furniture refurbishing, and spending time with their husband Matthew and corgi Apollo.

Quoting Dickey, “I think of Food Network icon Ina Garten's 2024 memoir. In it, she talks about the idea of being ready ‘when the luck’ happens. This tells me that I should keep working on developing skills, because when an opportunity comes along, you want to be able to confidently say yes. I don't know what that next chapter may be, but I will keep refining skills and learning new ones along the way for sure.” A sound piece of advice that encourages all of us to seek out new skills and opportunities while being ready and open for what the world might choose to throw our way.

“Always look for ways to learn and improve. Never grow complacent. Extract all the knowledge you can from as many experiences as you can.”

Thank you, Dr. Dickey for the encouraging words, the insight into the life of an educator/performer, and for being part of the Meet the Members project. by @iteaonline
