World Cotton Day: October 7th.

A cotton boll may begin with a farmer, but in India, its story rarely ends there. It can pass through the hands of ginners, spinners, dyers, weavers, printers and embroiderers, gathering knowledge and character at every stage.

That is what makes cotton so deeply woven into India’s textile traditions. The same fibre can become the structured geometry of Ikat, the layered printing of Ajrakh, the fine stitches of Chikankari or the everyday simplicity of Khadi.

This World Cotton Day, we’re celebrating not just the fibre, but the many hands and generations of knowledge that give it meaning.

So it's all wood, and all Monpa. A mask a monk vanishes behind to become a deity for a day, and a cup a grandmother wraps her hands around every morning.
The same forest, the same hands, shaped once for the divine and once for the everyday.

In Tawang, wood can become much more than an object. In the hands of Monpa artisans, it can become the face of a deity, worn by a monk during Cham, or something as familiar as the wooden cup used for butter tea at home. The masks are made to move, to be worn and to transform the person behind them for the duration of the ritual. That same carving knowledge also lives in everyday objects, shaped from the same local wood and used generation after generation. Perhaps that is what makes this tradition so fascinating: the distance between the sacred and the everyday can be only a few strokes of a carving tool.

What if an old blanket wasn't the end of its story? In Kashmir, worn woollen blankets could be washed, felted and layered into the base of a Gabba, then transformed with colourful aari embroidery into something entirely new. The beauty is in that transformation: a material already used, worked again by hand, given warmth, colour and purpose for another generation. Gabba is a reminder that reuse did not always need a label it was simply part of how people made things last. A rug, a prayer mat, a mattress or a wedding gift, carrying both the warmth of wool and the knowledge of the hands that gave it a second life.

There is something quietly beautiful about Chikankari on cotton. The fabric stays light and breathable, while every little stitch adds texture without taking away its softness. Traditionally associated with Lucknow, Chikankari is known for delicate hand embroidery where stitches create flowers, vines and subtle patterns across the cloth. On a saree, that workmanship gets to unfold slowly as you wear it the kind of detail you notice more closely the longer you look. A textile that doesn't need to be loud to show how much work went into it.

Before a refrigerator cooled our water, the matka did it with nothing but clay, water and air. Its porous walls allow tiny amounts of water to reach the surface, where evaporation draws heat away and naturally lowers the temperature inside. But the beauty of the matka is not only in the science; it is in the fact that generations of potters turned an understanding of earth and climate into something used every day. Kept in a kitchen, courtyard or verandah, it is both a piece of traditional pottery and a quiet example of how deeply Indian craft has always understood its surroundings. Sometimes, the smartest technology is the one that never needed electricity.

A dokhona can look like a simple length of cloth, until you start reading it. Woven by Bodo women on their own looms, its agor motifs carry familiar forms from the world around them birds, animals, leaves and mountains turning everyday surroundings into a visual language. Even colour can speak: the plain yellow Dokhona Thaosi is traditionally associated with a Bodo bride, making the cloth part of the occasion itself. What makes the dokhona remarkable is that the knowledge lives with the weaver: she knows the loom, the motifs, the meanings and the making. It is not just something to wear, but a piece of Bodo knowledge made by hand and carried forward through generations.

Two craft traditions, one beautiful meeting. Sanganeri hand block printing brings delicate floral motifs and the unmistakable character of carved wooden blocks, while Maheshwari silk-cotton brings a light drape and subtle sheen to the fabric. Together, they turn an unstitched dress material into something you can shape your own way a kurta, a suit, an easy festive set. What makes it special is not just the finished print, but the hands and textile knowledge behind each layer: the printer in Sanganer and the weaver tradition of Maheshwar. Explore the beauty of Indian textiles where one craft meets another.

What if a plant that damaged a forest could become part of restoring it? In the forests of the Western Ghats, Lantana camara arrived as an ornamental plant and spread far beyond the gardens it was meant for. The Soliga community found another way to deal with it: harvest the mature stems and weave them using knowledge already rooted in bamboo craft. Chairs, baskets, lamps and other everyday objects now give the invasive plant a purpose while removing stems from the forest. It is a powerful reminder that indigenous knowledge does not always work against nature; sometimes, it knows how to work with a problem nature has been left to face.

In the hills of Sikkim, a carpet is more than something woven for the floor. It is a piece of Himalayan memory, built knot by knot on a wooden loom, with dragons, snow lions, lotus flowers and symbols carried through generations from Tibet. The hands making it today are continuing a knowledge system that lives not in manuals, but in watching, practising and passing it on. Even worn wool can find another life, remade instead of discarded. At iTokri, this is what makes handmade craft matter: not simply the beauty of the finished object, but the hands, stories and ways of making that keep it alive.

iny dots, tied by hand, become a pattern only when the cloth is opened. That is the quiet magic of Bandhani: each little resist point has to be tied before the dye touches the fabric, creating the familiar clusters, waves and dotted rhythms once the threads are released. Here, that traditional Bandhani language meets the smooth, fluid fall of modal silk, giving an old textile tradition a different expression. For us at iTokri, handmade textiles are not about keeping craft frozen in the past; they are about letting skilled hands and inherited techniques find their place in what we wear today.
