A simple top I made myself a few months back. It's a self drafted pattern I've been working on. Fabric from @itokri is block printed cotton. I really like the fabric, but I need to research how to stop the dye running. #sewingisfun✂️

Vegetable dyes in sarees: four colours that start as leaves, roots, rind and fruit.

Indigo comes from leaves. It's the blue in Ajrakh from Kutch and Dabu from Rajasthan. Madder comes from roots, and it gives Ajrakh its deep red.

Pomegranate rind dyes cloth yellow. Dip that yellow in indigo and it turns green, so one green can come from two plants.

Harda, also called myrobalan, is a dried fruit. It's often the first bath. It leaves a pale yellow and helps the colours after it hold.

If you could wear one colour straight from a plant, which would it be?

A little piece of Bengal in Aarya’s bedroom 🐅 🌴

Our family has roots in Santiniketan, the town in West Bengal that became synonymous with Rabindranath Tagore, art, literature and a particular kind of Bengali creative life. For generations, it has drawn Bengali families seeking a quieter world of red earth, trees, poetry, music and the arts - a place to retreat to, to learn and to imagine a different way of living.

I’ve always wanted a folk-inspired upholstered bedhead for Aarya’s room - something a little whimsical, a little otherworldly and connected to the visual world I grew up with. Not a literal recreation of a Bengali home, but something that carried a little of its spirit.

It seemed like fate then to come across this beautiful ‘Shantiniketan’ fabric by @sabyasachiofficial for @worldofnilaya by @asianpaints . The folkloric figures, palm trees, faded terracotta and dusty rose felt like discovering something familiar in an entirely new context.

There’s something lovely about bringing these references into a London bedroom, allowing them to become part of Aarya’s own story.

A little Bengal, a little imagination and a bed made for dreaming. ❤️

Sarees beyond India: four more countries where the saree is part of everyday or festive life.

India, where almost every region has its own weave, print or drape. Bangladesh, home of Jamdani, woven around Dhaka. Nepal, where Newar women wear the haku patasi, black cotton with a red border. Sri Lanka, where the osariya drape has a frill at the waist. And Pakistan, where the saree comes out for weddings and festivities.

Which country did we miss? Tell us below.

Silk cotton saree: one set of threads is silk, the other is cotton. The silk gives it a soft sheen, and the cotton keeps it light and breathable. It drapes more easily than a crisp cotton and weighs less than pure silk, which makes it easy to wear through a long day.

You’ll find it woven in Chanderi and Maheshwar in Madhya Pradesh, and in Kota Doria from Kaithun, Rajasthan.

Team silk, team cotton, or team both? Tell us below.
