Vintage fashion isnโ€™t a trend for me. Iโ€™ve been wearing true vintage from the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s for decades.
This is simply how I dress every day.
#vintagefashion

25+ years of researching British and American fashion from the 1930-1950s, and 14 years of writing about vintage fashion on my blog. And Iโ€™m still utterly obsessed.

#vintagefashionblogger

Yes, I wear vintage fashion every day, but Iโ€™m not a vintage purist. I love mixing decades and making true vintage work for life in 2026.

I donโ€™t just wear vintage. I live with it, I research it and share what I learn. After all these years, Iโ€™m still under its spell.

Follow along for vintage fashion history, practical tips and the occasional justification for why I absolutely needed yet another 1940s gingham suit. #truevintage taken in Warsaw, Poland by @itsbeyondmycontrol

Beautiful start to the year as I had the pleasure and honour to collaborate with my favourite faux fur brand @helenmooreengland ๐Ÿ’— ๐Ÿ“ธ @gregorymichaelking
Thank you for the interview and for choosing me as your guest blogger! [LINK IN THE BIO]

In the picture, Iโ€™m wearing a Helen Moore Capelet in the most delicious looking shade of pink that reminds me of a macaroon from Ladureฬe, my biggest weakness in life. At the moment, I wear it indoors, as it goes perfectly with all of my 1940s nightgowns and the interiors of our boudoir.

The new to me CC41 nightgown is from one of my favourite vintage sellers @pincurlsvintageservices ๐Ÿ’‹

I Donโ€™t Need to Look Modern. What about you?

I wear original garments from the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s, every day but I love to mix eras and break the rules. I wear sunglasses after dark and a hat after 6pm. Iโ€™m not a vintage snob, I donโ€™t dress for special occasions, and I certainly donโ€™t care about being fashionable.

I would rather wear a beautifully crafted original 1940s skirt with signs of wear than a brand new one from a fast-fashion brand.

I LOVE clothes that have a history! ๐Ÿ–ค

Hat after 6pm with 1940s evening wear: yes or absolutely not?

Here, Iโ€™m wearing original 1940s evening wear and wandering through the gardens of an 18th-century palace, and Iโ€™m breaking one very specific rule. โ€œThe hat should be off by 6pm.โ€

Iโ€™ve spent more than 25 years researching the clothes of the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s, but one of the things I LOVE most about vintage fashion is that it isnโ€™t only about dates, labels and constructions.

Itโ€™s about imagination.

About how a dress can change the way we walk, how we feel, and perhaps even how we see the world around us.

This is my vintage world where I often break the rules. And frankly, I rather like it here.

Would you like to know more about what women actually ore in the 1940s?

Leave โ€œ1940s Fashionโ€ in the comments, and Iโ€™ll send you the link to my Ultimate Guide to 1940s Womenโ€™s Fashion.

And tomorrow, Iโ€™m publishing a brand new article all bout what women really wore for an evening out in the 1940s.

Because apparently, I wasnโ€™t finished researching it.

I donโ€™t have vintage clothes waiting for a special occasion.

I live every day as if it were my last. If I feel like putting on an elegant 1950s suit to go buy milk, thatโ€™s exactly what Iโ€™ll do. And yes, Iโ€™m often asked by people I meet along the way if Iโ€™m shooting a film, part of re-enactment group, or Iโ€™m part of a theatre performance. It doesnโ€™t bother me in the slightest, because vintage isnโ€™t a costume to me. Itโ€™s what I wear. Every day. For groceries, for errands, for dinner, for absolutely no reason whatsoever.

Life is far too short to save the beautiful things for โ€œsomedayโ€. So put on your best vintage today. Wear the dress. Put on the hat!

Donโ€™t wait for a special occasion. Make today the occasion.

Now tell me, whatโ€™s the most fabulous thing in your wardrobe that youโ€™re still saving for a โ€œspecial occasionโ€?

The topic pertaining to dating vintage clothing is NOT something I could possibly cover in one carousel.

Even my lengthy and very in-depth guide to dating vintage clothing, which I published on my website years ago, is still constantly being updated. After 25+ years of research, I still come across new, fascinating details that are me think, โ€œOh, I absolutely need to add that!โ€ And naturally, I wan to share the with you.

So please consider this carousel a little teaser. There are so many clues to look for, from labels and construction to fabrics, zippers, fastenings and all those tiny details that can reveal when a garments was actually made.

Because something being described as โ€œ1940sโ€ doesnโ€™t necessarily make it 1940s.

Would you like to learn more? Comments โ€œDating Vintage Fashionโ€ below and Iโ€™โ€™l send you the link to my full article.

Have you ever bought something described as โ€œoriginal 1940sโ€ only to discover later that it was actually from the 1970s?

It happens more often than you think.

And the tricky part is that later garment can deliberately and heavily borrow from the silhouettes and styling of an earlier era. A 1970s woollen skirt suit in a 1940s style can remarkaby convincing at first glance.

After 25+ year of researching vintage fashion, Iโ€™ve learned that dating a garment is about looking beyond the obvious and putting several clues together, although some are very obvious.

Iโ€™ve put everything I look for into a very long, very detailed, very nerdy guide to dating vintage clothing.

If you wish to learn how to tell what decade your vintage actually comes from, comment โ€œ VINTAGE GUIDEโ€ and Iโ€™ll send you a link.

Because โ€œ1940s styleโ€ and โ€œfrom the 1940sโ€ are two very different things.

A 1940s Autumn Outfit.๐Ÿ
And yes, this is what I actually wear, because I dress in true-vintage every day, not just for photographs or videos or because Iโ€™m playing dress-up.

Today, I opted for a 1940s Koret of California suit that is a live saver during cooler days. My favourite late 1940s Valensy hat I bought from @lilyscarletvintage fully fashioned stockings from @cervinparisofficial and my beloved @memeryshoes

A perfectly ordinary fall day, if your idea of ordinary is looking like you stepped out of a 1940s film noir.

โ€œYou shouldnโ€™t wear vintage lingerie. Its unhygienic.โ€

Iโ€™ve heard this so many times before, but here is the thing, not every piece of vintage lingerie was worn. Iโ€™ve bought plenty of 1940s knickers and slips that were NOS (new old stock) when I found them, and I still have a few pieces with their original tag attached.

Of course, I always hand wash vintage lingerie before wearing it. That should really go without saying.

And hereโ€™s something to think about...

If youโ€™re disgusted by the idea that someone before you may have worn your vintage lingerie, you might get a bit of a shock when you realise that new lingerie in a store has probably been tried on by dozens of people before you bought it.

Vibrate isnโ€™t automatically dirty. Itโ€™s simply old. And with a little care, the beautifully made vintage pieces can definitely be worn today.

My beautiful 1930s kimono robe is from the one and only @daggers.and.dames.vintage โค๏ธ

How many shades of pink vintage underwear do you have? This is a serious question for collectors of 1930s and 1940s knickers, bras, suspenders, and teddies.

Iโ€™m a true believer that whatโ€™s underneath counts, and as much as I like many of the contemporary lingerie brands, nothing can match the way a 1930s or 1940s slip or tap pants feel against the skin.

Designed by the legendary Irene Sharaff, this is the second original costume from Mommie Dearest in my collection, worn by Faye Dunaway, who portrayed Joan Crawford in the film.

What I find interesting is that only one version of each costume was made which is why every garment had to be handled with extraordinary care throughout filming.

And this is precisely why as a custodian of Sharaffโ€™s two extraordinary, dare I say iconic costumes, I treat them with the utmost care and respect. #1940sfashion taken in Warsaw, Poland by @itsbeyondmycontrol
