Creativity isn’t built by recreating someone else’s movement. It’s built by trusting your own. In an industry where we have endless access to everyone else’s style, it’s easy to fall into imitation. Learning someone else’s sequence will always be easier than creating your own. But your unique voice only develops when you give it room to exist.I started pole in a time when we figured things out through trial, error, and pole jams with friends. That process forced creativity. Here are a few ways to nurture yours:✨1. Don’t take choreography so literally. Learn the concept, then explore. If your body naturally wants to move differently than the instructor’s, honor that.✨2. Use inspiration, not imitation. Watch a video once. Don’t pause, dissect, or memorize it. The moments that truly resonate will stay with you and reappear in ways that feel authentic to your movement.✨3. Stop comparing. You can admire someone’s art without questioning your own. One Instagram clip doesn’t show the years of practice behind it. It’s easy to assume someone’s perfectly aesthetic video was built overnight, but I can assure you, it wasn’t. ✨4. Let movement evolve. Don’t expect to master something in one session. Revisit it often, allow it to change, and give yourself permission to make it your own instead of recreating it perfectly.✨5. The people who leave the biggest mark in this industry aren’t the ones who blend in, they’re the ones who lean into what makes them different. You’ll enjoy your journey so much more when you stop chasing someone else’s identity and start developing your own. The recognition that comes from being authentically you is far more fulfilling than being known as someone else’s imitation.The goal isn’t to dance like someone else. I had so many requests to let this one live on the feed forever… so here it is ❤️After taking some time to reflect on my career in this industry, I wanted to share a little more about why I do what I do. This only scratches the surface, but I hope it also encourages other teachers and artists to ask themselves the same question: why? We owe it to our students who invest their time and $ learning from us. Because the purpose behind what we do is just as important as the act itself.Every week, I receive messages from new artists asking to be featured on my platform @teambasework, and the very first thing I want to know is *why*. Is it simply for exposure, or is there a deeper reason you feel called to share your movement with others?As teachers, we hold responsibility. The energy, intention, and purpose we bring into a space matters. Understanding your “why” matters. Did I leave a piece of my heart in Fiji? Probably. I’ll just have to go back and get it one day🌴There’s something really beautiful about saying *yes* to experiences before you know exactly how they’re going to unfold.This trip reminded me that some of the best moments in life are the ones you choose to be brave enough to experience.So here’s your sign to book the trip, take the class, buy the plane ticket, invest in yourself, meet new people, chase the dream, or do the thing that’s been sitting on your heart.Life is a bit too short not to enjoy the fruits of our labor. And when I tell you I treated myself harder than I ever have... that’s putting it lightly. 🫢I earned this. I deserved this. And I’m coming home softer, braver, happier, a little more broke 🤪, and somehow even more myself.The older I get, the more I realize that the biggest risk isn’t failing, it’s letting opportunities pass because we’re waiting for the “perfect” time. That time rarely comes. And who knows if we even get it?The memories, the beautiful people you meet, the growth, the laughter, the stories you share, the unexpected moments... those are the things that stay with you forever.So if life hands you an opportunity that feels a little scary but a whole lot exciting, say yes. On my journey home from Fiji, I’m reflecting on the memories I’ve made that will stay with me for a lifetime. 🤍I have so much to share, but for now I just want to say how grateful I am that I’ve been brave enough to take chances in life. The kind that led me all the way to teaching for @kaylabrenda @bodylove.sanctuary in MF Fiji🌴 And if you want a little taste of this choreeee (said in Daddy @beatsbyblayk voice 😏), I’m bringing it to L.A. on **August 16**!
