The waters returned to the Ironbound yesterday, reminding us what this ground still is: the Newark Meadows, tended by the Lenape, who have cared for this place and all its life since long before it was named.

In two weeks, join us in that spirit.

"The Islands Have Stories" is a series of four walks through Newark's Meadows, guided by 4 artists exploring 4 ways of sensing place.

On each walk, an artist guides participants in making works on paper, gathered afterward into a limited run of riso-printed publications and shared back with participants and the City of Newark.

WALK 1:
Oct 24 / Chrystofer Davis / Framing Edges

WALK 2:
Oct 25 / Larissa Belcic / Foraging Tools

WALK 3:
Oct 31 / Andrew Harrison / Making Inks

WALK 4:
Nov 1 / Amanda Thackray / Rubbing Place

RISO BOOK LAUNCH:
April 21, 2027 / Under the Pink Moon

"The Islands Have Stories" is free and open to the public, though RSVPs are required. Space is limited!

This program marks the launch of Newark Dept of Care & Belonging, a speculative civic agency built on a simple premise that place – and all the life forms living with it – are bound in care for one another, and that this belonging should guide how civic decisions get made.

Newark Dept of Care & Belonging is partially supported by a Creative Catalyst grant from the City of Newark, Division of Arts and Cultural Affairs, and a Newark Artist Accelerator grant from Project for Empty Space and the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.

MAKE A ZINE OUTSIDE (YOUR HEAD).

To publish WITH and not ABOUT place requires new tools, new systems, new desires.

For the last few months, we have been nurturing these possibilities into reality. Our mobile publishing studio is nearly complete: tough on the outside, tender on the inside and ready to go nearly anywhere.

She makes her debut in just two weeks, as part of "The Islands Have Stories," a series of four walks through Newark's Meadows, guided by 4 artists exploring 4 ways of sensing place.

On each walk, an artist guides participants in making works on paper, gathered afterward into a limited run of riso-printed publications and shared back with participants and the City of Newark.

JOIN OUR TEAM!

We're looking for someone whose talents as a book designer are matched by their technical prowess with Riso printing.

In this hybrid role, your main responsibilities include designing, managing and producing in-house book projects (artist books, photo books, zines) with our mighty RISO MH9450, and ensuring the machine is well-maintained throughout the process.

You'd join our small team as we grow our print program: close to the work, hands-on with every project, and with a real say in how the studio takes shape.

This part-time in-person position starts Sept 1.

It's a tremendous honor to be in the sonic thick of things with such embodyers of place. Thank you for the invitation @pppedestrian, for inspiring this sound piece and for trusting a process that is better left unmappable.

"Foraging for Signals In Care of Unfinished Places" follows two foragers who walk along the edges of Jersey City in search of something they feebly claim exists. Coerced only by the Hackensack, the phragmites, the wind, and the trains, a poem of meadowlandic prowess has them refusing the orders of a looming skyline. What emerges is a play-by-play between bodies bounding in cartesian order and bodies sounding out the swampy dialects of place.

This sound piece is dedicated to William Carlos Williams and his miraged making of New Jersey.

________
ABOUT THE SERIES
Montez Press Radio’s fourth series, The Walk, is out now. Co-curated with Alex Wolfe @pppedestrian.

Allan Kaprow once said, “A walk down 14th Street is more amazing than any masterpiece of art.” So for this series, we invited artists, writers, thinkers, and others who move through the world attentively to respond to the idea of the walk. Through walking tours, field recordings, audio diaries, conversations, lectures, drifts, oral histories, and sonic walks, these works consider movement as both an artistic practice and a way of understanding contemporary life.

Thank you for joining us at Jersey Art Book Fair 2026!

Over three days, we welcomed 150 local and international exhibitors alongside dozens of programs, film screenings, and performances.

A heartfelt thank you to our host, Mana Contemporary for once again opening their beautiful space to us in the heart of Journal Square; to our dedicated Fair staff, for the care and thought they brought to every part of the weekend; to our generous partners, Monira Foundation and Jersey City's Office of Cultural Affairs, whose support makes this non-profit event possible; and to our inspiring exhibitors, who showed a remarkable range of books, prints, and zines, and who truly make JAB Fair what it is.

JAB Fair 2026 marks a turning point in our vision of an art book fair: a space to build a community of artists, designers, small presses, and independent publishers who approach print as a radical form of resistance and belonging.

Stay tuned for more details about JAB Fair 2027!

🗣 This year’s Newark Artist Accelerator grant provided funding for nine creative, community-centered projects by Newark-based, multidisciplinary visual artists.

✨ GRANT HIGHLIGHT | Petia Morozov x DENSE (@itsdense) | “Newark Department of Care and Belonging”

➡️ “The Newark Department of Care and Belonging” revives the town crier through public walks and mobile zine-making, starting in the Ironbound. Using a converted equipment case, it engages residents, land, and river as co-authors of urban narratives. The resulting zine library documents stories and informs inclusive, community-centered city planning.

🔹This year’s fund is made possible by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts Regional Regranting Program @warholfoundation 💫 Learn more at newarkartistaccelerator.org

ICYMI!! I'll be plotting live for 2 hours at @manacontemporary JC this Saturday starting at 12:30 for the Jersey Art Book Fair.

In collaboration with @itsdense, I'll be plotting new work titled "Homebound" which asks participants to share something specific that reminds them of home. Responses, including text, images, and voices, have been collated and fed into various algorithms where they'll be deconstructed and abstracted.

This process explores how something deeply personal gets fed through a system that can't feel it.

Even if you miss this Saturday, the project is ongoing. Call 551-220-2368 to share what feels like home to you. taken in Jersey City, New Jersey by @itsdense

THERE GOES THE NEIGHBORHOOD!

It's hard to believe that we're just a little more than one week away from welcoming you all back to Jersey Art Book Fair 2026, in the heart of Jersey City's Journal Square.

We can't wait to obsess over, laugh, sigh, pause, nerd out, show off, give a fuck and drool over what unites us: our love of print.

But it feels especially timely.

Because dare we say... this edition is landing sooo differently.

With one shitshow after another and everything we love and care about teetering on the precipice, all that JAB Fair is, is the hope that print matters – always has and always will.

Our tiny mighty team knows and feels this, pouring our hearts and hands into making this the landmark year we hope it can be.

From the incredible roster of artists, designers, small presses and independent publishers, to the humbling commitment of our hosts @manacontemporary and supporters @monirafoundation and @jcartandculture, JAB FAIR 2026 is our time to come together and be reminded of the power that books, zines, graphic novels, posters, chapbooks and other printed matter have to be the medium of connection.

We've been dreaming about what an art book fair can be for a while now, so do expect to feel some changes. But what will never ever change is how much it means to hold this precious promise together with you, to meet old friends, make new ones and leave more inspired than how we arrive.

All for the love – and hope – of print.

So grab your tickets as soon as you humanly can, and let's GATHER.
