I’ve been fascinated for a while by what’s possible with a photobooth. One of the artists who first got me thinking about this was Alain Baczynsky. For about 30 months, after a psychoanalysis session, Baczynsky would enter a photobooth in Paris and photograph himself. He eventually made 242 self-portraits. Writing a reflection to his session on the back. I love the limitations of a photobooth. The camera doesn’t move. The format doesn’t change. You step inside. The machine gives you seconds to figure out what can happen within them. I’ve wanted to play with that for years. So thank you to @flickr for letting me spend an unreasonable amount of time with the photobooths at @modebyflickr . I left MODE impressed by so much of what Flickr brought to Minnesota. It was ambitious. Bringing photographers and artists here from around the country and the world whose work I was excited to learn + talk about. My one hope for next year is to see more of Minnesota reflected back in it. There is such a deep photography community here. A lot of it lives through community members, small informal groups, DIY projects, artist-run spaces, group chats, word of mouth, and people introducing one another. I’d love to see more of that community become part of MODE next year. by @itsdrw
I’m deeply honored and excited to share that my photo “signs of refusal” has been acquired by the @mnmuseum. The photo is made up of 117 stop signs I photographed throughout Minneapolis, either on foot or while riding my bike, during Operation Metro Surge. I often think about how, during moments of resistance and uprisings, the things people leave behind are some of the first things erased. Signs, notices, messages, manifestos, and all the ways people take up space. I wanted to find a way to capture some of that before it disappeared. A lot of kind people helped me bring this to the State Fair. A massive thank you to @lillie_billie for picking up and delivering the work, @darren.bs for helping me print this very large image, and @lili.avis and @mitreboxmpls for helping me make a custom frame for it. It feels really special to have shown this photo at the State Fair and to now have it become part of a museum collection here in Minnesota. cinematography in 2nd video: @whos.that.bint by @itsdrw

Come help me collect valuable scientific data about clouds, dreams, and empanadas. This Sunday, I’ll be bringing the Dream Machine to El Nuevo Campo for a cloud gazing pop-up. The machine is an experimental device designed to collect signals from the future and help them find their way here. Come grab a free empanada, look at some clouds, and share a recurring dream you have about the future. 📍 El Nuevo Campo (E Lake St & 27th Ave S) 🕕 Sunday, August 30 // 12–4 Major thanks to @visitlakestreet and El Nuevo Campo for making this pop-up possible. by @itsdrw
What happens when you invite people to speak their futures? Visitors to the Walker hillside activated Drew Arrieta’s participatory project “Dream Machines” last week. Through a dream hotline and a sculptural pop-up recording booth, participants were invited to leave a dream and contribute to a growing public archive. Part of our weekly Summer Social series featuring programming designed to reunite us, delight us, and remind us how great it is to be together—every Thursday night. by @itsdrw
At a time when so much feels broken, speaking aloud the futures we want can be an act of possibility, self-determination, and collective authorship. Tomorrow night, come visit Dream Machines on the @walkerartcenter hillside. Contribute a dream for the future to a growing public archive. 📍Walker Art Center Hillside 🕔 5 - 9 PM, Thursday, June 18th 🌝Special guests: @watheca.records vinyl set, a special improvised music performance by @yesterato_wolfe, @annadoooodle, @patkeen & @drdiamonddavepower ☁️ See you there ☁️ by @itsdrw
For the last several months I’ve been secretly building and testing a piece of obsolete technology known as Dream Machines. Dream Machines collect signals from futures attempting to arrive and helps them come to life. On Thursday, June 18th, the project will be hosted on the @walkerartcenter hillside from 5–9 PM. Come contribute a dream for the future to a growing public archive. Dreams can be practical, personal, collective, impossible, or something you’ve never said aloud before. At a moment when so much feels uncertain, Dream Machines is a small invitation to imagine what might come next and to speak it aloud. Sometimes futures begin that way. I’m lucky to be joined by @yesterato_wolfe, @annadoooodle, @_patkeen_ & @drdiamonddavepower for a special improvised music performance and @watheca.records for a vinyl set, all inspired by dreams, futurism, and collective imagination. Dream Machines has been shaped through the generosity, labor, and imagination of many people. Special thanks to one and only @dog_bowl_repairman, @studio.uus @stevenbleau, and everyone who has helped bring this strange machine into the world. by @itsdrw
Grateful to have shown work from my project What Remains at @icp a couple of weeks ago in NYC. The project is a photographic civic archive of the temporary signs, warning systems, memorials, and mutual aid structures created as Operation Metro Surge reshaped everyday life in Minnesota. Whistles left on doors. Altered stop signs. Handmade notices marking where someone had been taken. Honored to share my work alongside such incredible photographers and human beings all capturing their own unique stories: @patiencezalanga @jaida.greyeagle @timevansphoto @lexigraceparra @taveraxavier @no_jackson. Thank you to @magnumfoundation for supporting the project and helping me produce a zine booklet featuring our work. A thank you to @tif_ng and @emma_raynes for your time and support too. by @itsdrw
Minnesota today. Against fascism. Against billionaire power. For each other. by @itsdrw
hey friends, I want you to be part of my new photo magazine, wider skies. The project explores speculative futurism, not as science fiction, but as a way of noticing the near futures already forming around us. I’m inviting photographers to submit up to four film photographs for the first issue. All experience levels are welcome. I’m interested in photographs that point to possible futures grounded in real life. Images that reflect care, repair, survival, or shared responsibility in everyday life. This might include moments of care, systems at work, quiet adaptation, portraits, unexpected uses of space, or small signs of change already happening around us. You can approach this as literally or as poetically as you’d like. The focus is on the future that already exists in everyday life. Feel free to tag a friend you think should submit. I have a limited amount of Kodak Pro 100 film available for free to anyone who wants to submit but doesn’t currently have access to film. Send me a DM to coordinate. ☁️ Deadline: April 10, 11:59 PM ☁️ Submit through the link in bio or at widerskies.photo This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund. by @itsdrw
