It's been 76 days since the Swim4TheOcean mission was complete, with Jono Ridler and the mission team arriving in Te-Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington. And still, the mahi continues. So where is the Swim4TheOcean petition at? ✍️

The Swim4TheOcean petition was formally presented and read in Parliament on 29 April. Last week, on 10 June, Live Ocean and Jono Ridler lodged a written submission in support of the petition’s call to end bottom trawling, outlining in more detail our case for change.

Connecting rangatahi with the voyaging heritage of the past, and creating new opportunities to sail for the future.

The Black Foils, Te Toki Voyaging Trust and Live Ocean came together at Ōkahu Bay for Te Hau Wawara, giving rangatahi the chance to feel the energy of the wind on our refitted sailing waka, alongside sailors from Te Toki and the Black Foils.

For some, it was their first time sailing. On shore, whānau explored voyaging and navigation, and learned more about the moana and how we can look after its health and future.

This was just the start. Hoake, let’s go!

Today is just the beginning!

An awesome day on the moana at Ōkahu Bay as some of New Zealand’s best sailors joined forces with master navigator Hoturoa Barclay-Kerr to give rangatahi a chance to try sailing on small waka and feel the power of the wind. 🌊⛵

Together, the Black Foils, Te Toki Voyaging Trust and Live Ocean share a vision for more rangatahi to experience sailing, connect with Aotearoa’s rich voyaging heritage and strengthen their connection to the moana.

Hoake! Let’s go! 👊

"They feel the wairua of wanting to share waiata with the rōpū that are on board and so just before coming back into the museum, our tamariki share songs from their schools or their families to bring life to the kaupapa." 💙

On this afternoon, this group of rangatahi shared Tongan hymn Himi 15 🇹🇴 while on board Haunui waka as part of their day of learning through the Ara Moana programme run by @tetokivoyagingtrust 🌊 by @itsliveocean

It's been a privilege to support @tetokivoyagingtrust's mahi of bringing Ara Moana to rangatahi in Auckland for five years now. That's thousands of kids learning about the moana and the many wayfinders who voyaged across the ocean! 🌊

Knowing and appreciating our history is critical in rebuilding our connection with the ocean so we can restore and protect it for future generations 💙 by @itsliveocean

Did you hear? A question about phasing out bottom trawling was asked during the live Leaders’ Debate last night! 🌊

Years of work from many individuals and organisations has gone into raising awareness around bottom trawling so it is hugely exciting to see it being discussed this election cycle.

As part of Swim4TheOcean, we submitted a petition (that 73,647 of you signed!) with a three-part ask calling for an end to bottom trawling. Check it out at the link in bio 📖 by @itsliveocean
