Connecting rangatahi with the voyaging heritage of the past, and creating new opportunities to sail for the future.

The Black Foils, Te Toki Voyaging Trust and Live Ocean came together at Ōkahu Bay for Te Hau Wawara, giving rangatahi the chance to feel the energy of the wind on our refitted sailing waka, alongside sailors from Te Toki and the Black Foils.

For some, it was their first time sailing. On shore, whānau explored voyaging and navigation, and learned more about the moana and how we can look after its health and future.

This was just the start. Hoake, let’s go!

Today is just the beginning!

An awesome day on the moana at Ōkahu Bay as some of New Zealand’s best sailors joined forces with master navigator Hoturoa Barclay-Kerr to give rangatahi a chance to try sailing on small waka and feel the power of the wind. 🌊⛵

Together, the Black Foils, Te Toki Voyaging Trust and Live Ocean share a vision for more rangatahi to experience sailing, connect with Aotearoa’s rich voyaging heritage and strengthen their connection to the moana.

These are black petrels/tākoketai!
Have you ever seen a bird diving for kaimoana before?

We are the seabird capital of the world, with roughly 10% of the world’s species nesting exclusively in Aotearoa! Black petrels in particular breed exclusively on Aotea (Great Barrier) and Te Hauturu-o-Toi (Little Barrier).

@itsliveocean is currently doing epic mahi tagging and tracking these guys to learn more about their migration, and drive smarter conservation for them across the Pacific. Check them out to learn more!

Live Ocean Foundation have just released their Impact Report. It reflects on the year from 1 April 2025 to 31 March 2026 and celebrates the collective impact they’ve had across science, innovation and outreach. Learn more at @itsliveocean

Jono Ridler’s epic 1,367km ocean swim over 90 days inspired 73,647 signatures on the Live Ocean petition calling for an end bottom trawling starting with seamounts.

The SWIM4THEOCEAN campaign had 36.4 million social media views, 1.27 million swim tracker views, and 416 media stories, representing a media reach of 390 million.

With your support, the largest ever tracker deployment on black petrel chicks is set to provide insights on the migratory journeys of 47 fledglings.

This year Ara Moana reached 1,442 students from 17 schools across Tāmaki Makaurau and the Waikato region, strengthening connections between our communities, the moana, and ancestral voyaging mātauranga.

Hydrophone monitoring in 12 sites across the Poor Knights Islands and Hauraki Gulf will help scientists detect invasive species, identify human impacts and assess ecosystem health.

Healthy kelp forests draw down up to 10X more atmospheric CO2 than degraded, kina-dominated reef.

11 DTAGs on Hector’s dolphins suggest their range and behaviours extend beyond what current marine mammal protections assume - so existing sanctuary boundaries may need extending.

True marine protection in Tīkapa Moana the Hauraki Gulf increased from 0.3% to approximately 5.9% of the Gulf’s area with the passing of new legislation including 12 new High Protection Areas.

The story of the tohorā/southern right whale is one of Aotearoa’s ocean success stories!

Tohorā in Aotearoa were once almost hunted to extinction… but now the population has increased so much that we are seeing a spillover effect up our coastline!

Hopefully the population will continue to increase, and we will continue to spot them more and more along our coastlines 😊💙.

This video is part of a series where I talk about my role during the Swim for the Ocean project. This one is about the image that was selected for the New Zealand Geographic Photographer of the Year Awards. Take a listen to hear a little about what it took to capture this image of Jono Ridler, the ultramarathon swimmer who swam from the top of the North Island to Wellington over 90 days earlier this year to help put an end to bottom trawling. I was there every stroke of the way, capturing both stills and video to document this once-in-a-lifetime adventure.
