Need to make more of an effort to share a photo or two.

Back in the foothills of the Indian Himalayas, this beautiful soul sat peacefully preparing a homemade hive for keeping his bees (and shows us what good mobility in older age can look like).

5 minutes from home. A couple of hundred pounds worth of equipment that will last a very long time. A skill that can be learned in 10 minutes. 🌲 🧗

It’s just climbing up a rope and sliding back down but they bloody love it and they’d happily do it for hours.

If you don’t know how to do this…neither did I until someone showed me and that’s what is important to remember. It’s so easy to think that adventurous stuff is somehow out of reach but everyone learned somewhere.

So find someone who knows (there’s loads of outdoor instructors for every activity) and pay them to give you a fun day out and up-skill yourself for a lifetime of fun.

In my 20s, sleeping in a van in a lay-by was a regular occurrence. Back then it wasn’t a camper-van with a bed and a fridge. It was a transit van, loaded up with bikes and water containers and collapsible tables after leading hundreds of cyclists around Europe somewhere.

I often fashioned a hammock out of discarded inner tubes and packing blankets and I fell asleep to the smell of GT85 bike lube and rotting banana peels. Honestly, the feeling of nostalgia as I think of that blend of smells is powerful.

But sleeping at a random location on the side of the road is something I think we should all do. In a van. In a camper. In a car. Whatever. It’s the ultimate easy, accessible adventure and makes a Wednesday night way more interesting and a Thursday morning coffee even more glorious.

Big trips are great. But you don’t need one to give your kids a real adventure.

We left home at lunch time on Saturday and we were back for lunch with the rest of the family on Sunday.

These micro adventures are low effort, high reward and they’re the ones that actually happen, because you don’t need to plan for months to make them real.

Start small. Keep it simple. Just get them outside and hang out with them.

Hey, remember when Instagram was all about photos? 📷

I have literal millions of photos that have never seen the light of day because the pressure of a stupid algorithm that has deemed photography less valuable than a ropey video of someone reviewing a chicken wrap after 12 pints. 🐔 🍺

But a photo…a single moment, a split-second frozen in time. Nothing compares.
