A spot of tree climbing at sunrise! And what a beautiful morning for it too 🤗 only 1degC so a bit chilly and there was a lot of frost on the ground, but it made for a very picturesque scene in Nettlebed.
.
Strange feeling setting the alarm for 5:45 in order to go tree climbing before work... but that was the plan. Do something a bit uncomfortable but fun! I used to love tree climbing at prep school, getting exciting about it and the nervousness of being high up. We don’t really do anything childish and fun anymore... other than lifting your kids up into a tree to sit on a branch. Well today was my turn 💪 and thanks to @themarcobarcella for bringing me along 👍... the last photo is Marco near the top, far higher than I had the balls to go 😬 ... my photo looks like I’m just standing on the floor holding the tree steady for him 🤷‍♂️... baby steps.

This morning I spent time with @benvsduchenne Ben has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Duchenne for short. It’s a particularly cruel life limiting disease. ——
A big part of capturing Bens story this morning involved sitting down with Alex & Lisa (Bens parents) and talking to them about their life. We found out how they met. How they fell in love. How complete they felt with the arrival of Ben, and the unconditional love that they felt ❤️

Then we moved on to the story of Bens Duchenne diagnosis. We went from their parents instinct that knew something wasn’t right, through to the life changing moment that the worst fears of their paediatrician were confirmed. ———
There were tears. Big, heartbreaking, desperate tears. Tears on both sides of the camera as I prodded these magnificently brave and remarkable humans to bare their souls. As a filmmaker it’s one of those occasions when you feel almost shameful that you are making these people relive such desperate moments. ——-
The sad fact is that Ben, Alex, Lisa & Zach (their other son, 2 years old) have more desperate times ahead. They are dealing with their reality one day at a time. They’re fighting as hard as they can to provide Ben with a quality of life that makes his life worth living. They are doing so with a steely determination and quite remarkably with smiles of their faces. ——
The thing that struck me most of all today when listening to their story is how humbled they are by the support of their friends and family. How these people feel humbled by the support of their community is incredible to me. My view is that our community is duty bound to help. I’m proud of the fact that our community IS pulling together, but at the end of today I am in awe of the determination, bravery, humour, love & compassion with which Lisa & Alex care for their son. ———
Today @wearethecreativeuk used our skill set in order to help raise awareness of Duchenne and in particular about the battle Ben & his family face. There’s no thanks needed for that, it’s our duty.
