POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
One of the biggest myths in leadership is that credibility comes from having all the answers.

So many leaders feel they need to project confidence, certainty and control, even when they’re carrying stress, self-doubt or uncertainty behind the scenes.

The irony?

The energy we spend managing how we’re perceived can quietly get in the way of the very thing we’re trying to build: trust.

Credibility isn’t built in one big moment.

It’s built in the small, everyday moments when people decide whether they believe us, trust us and want to follow us.

This clip is from a recent keynote where I share why I believe credibility works differently than most of us were taught.

I’m curious...

What’s one behaviour that instantly increases a leader’s credibility in your eyes? taken in Toronto, Canada by @itsshannontalbot

Early in my career, I left a job rather than tell my boss I was trying to get pregnant.

Made up a vague excuse about wanting broader experience. He said no. I didn’t push it. A few weeks later I handed in my resignation and completely blindsided someone I’d worked with for a while.

A few years later, new job, still the same instinct. I was taking half a Gravol before big meetings to manage my anxiety. Not a full one. A full one and they’d have caught on.

Two different situations. Same logic.

If I just hold it together, I won’t have to say the hard thing.

I told both stories this week to 300 HR professionals in Toronto. The Gravol got the laughs. The quiet after the other one is what stayed with me.

Most people in that room had their own version.

The credibility gap isn’t about competence. It’s the distance between who you are and who you’ve decided you’re “supposed to be” at work.

What’s the conversation you’ve been avoiding?

Fall is my favourite season 🍂 and this one is shaping up to be a pretty special one.

Since I was a teenager, I’ve dreamt of being a speaker. Not because I wanted to be in the spotlight, but because I loved the idea that something I said could help someone think differently, see something differently, or maybe even do something differently.

And now I get to do just that at four events over the next four weeks. 🎤

Toronto. Across Canada virtually. Toronto again. And then Saint-Sauveur, Quebec.

Teenage Shannon would be pretty damn excited about this. ❤️ taken in Toronto, Canada by @itsshannontalbot

One of the coolest and most nerve-wracking experiences of our trip.

Sleeping in a treehouse, 10 minutes away from anyone and hearing animals around us all night.

I was doing ok until Jackson told me he was nervous and he never gets nervous!! 😬

The next morning when our guide picked us up, he told us a pride of lions had walked by in the night which was pretty cool. I’m also sure there were elephants given the sounds of branches breaking a lot of the night. And thankfully, we did a good job of putting the food away so no baboons or monkeys joined us. taken in The Hide, Zimbabwe Safari Lodge by @itsshannontalbot

Seriously. This kid. ❤️

We just spent 27 days together travelling through Switzerland, Zimbabwe, Botswana and South Africa, and I would do it all again in a second.

Before we left, I had a few worries. How would Jackson handle working 8-hour days, 5.5 days a week while we volunteered? What would my incredibly picky eater actually eat? And, perhaps most importantly, would 27 straight days together be… a lot? 😂

Well, he completely surprised me.

I honestly don’t think he complained once the entire trip. I’m pretty sure I got frustrated more often than he did.

Over 27 days, we slept in eight different beds (and somehow the most comfortable was at Chipangali, where we volunteered for two weeks!), met the most incredible people, saw things I never imagined we’d see, and had experiences I know we’ll be talking about for years.

The people we met along the way were such a huge part of what made this trip so special. So much kindness, generosity, humour and warmth everywhere we went.

I went into this adventure with high hopes, and somehow it exceeded every one of them.

But my favourite part? Getting to experience it all with this kid. ❤️

Africa, you were incredible. And Jackson… I’d travel with you again anytime. taken in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe by @itsshannontalbot

What an incredible two weeks. ❤️

Jackson and I came to Zimbabwe hoping to learn, help and spend time caring for some amazing animals. We’re leaving with so much more than we ever expected.

We are truly in awe of the Wilson family and what they have built at Chipangali. For more than 50 years, their family has dedicated themselves to rescuing, rehabilitating and caring for Zimbabwe’s wildlife, while also educating the next generation about conservation. Seeing that work up close, and getting to play even a small part in it, has been something we will never forget.

A huge thank you as well to the entire Chipangali team. We learned so much from you, laughed a lot, worked hard, got VERY dirty 😂, and loved every minute of it. And sharing the experience with volunteers from around the world made these two weeks even more special.

This photo also represents something pretty amazing. Thank you to all of our friends and family who donated money, towels and bedding to Chipangali. ❤️ Being able to hand the Wilson family this cheque (and a full suitcase of donations) and know that so many people back home wanted to support the work happening here meant so much to us.

Thank you, Chipangali, for welcoming us into your world. We will never forget the animals, the people, the laughs, the lessons and this incredible little corner of Zimbabwe. 🇿🇼🐾❤️
