Art and news from the Painting Area at Indiana University Bloomington
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Paintings by Eskenazi faculty member Dominic Mangila went on view Thursday, September 24 at the Armory Show in New York. His works are being presented by the The Drawing Room gallery together with two other Southeast Asian artists: Rirkrit Tiravanija, Tomas Vu.

From the Drawing Room’s newsletter: „Bringing together three distinct practices shaped by histories that move across Southeast Asia and the United States, the presentation reflects on the intersections of politics, memory, identity, and place through painting and sculpture. Rirkrit Tiravanija presents new paintings on newspaper that continue his ongoing inquiry into social disorder, drawing from American political upheaval and global unrest. Tomas Vu debuts paintings and sculptural surfboards that weave together cultural memory, technology, and the enduring influence of David Bowie, where hand-crafted traditions meet visions of the future. Dominic Mangila presents new paintings that revisit the geopolitical legacy of the 1991 Mount Pinatubo eruption alongside imagined underwater landscapes of the contested West Philippine Sea, navigating abstraction through history and lived experience.”

The Armory Show remains on view at the Javits Center through Sunday, September 27 and online until October 4.

"For those who feel that the contemporary art world is awash in the profane," wrote the reviewer, "Mr. Cowan's work offers a taste of the sacred." ‘Nicoleta’ by Andreea Alunei - @andreeaalunei
🎨MFA Candidate in Painting (2025)
.
‘This body of work reflects pivotal moments in my life: the death of my mother, Nicoleta, and the birth of my daughter, who inherited her name. These experiences of life leaving and entering the body, along with the maternal bond, shape my artistic exploration.
Through blending the observable and the existential, I create a new personal mythology that investigates themes of birth, death, spirituality, cultural identity, and motherhood. My paintings create a layered, dreamlike world through visual metaphors. The small scale of my pieces invites an intimate connection with viewers, while the tactile and luminous qualities of the surface reflect themes of fragility, spirituality, and impermanence. Inspired by medieval illuminated manuscripts, l prioritize spiritual and symbolic meaning over anatomical accuracy. The vivid color palette and unconventional mark-making evoke the feel of children’s illustrations, with recurring characters and motifs like halos, goats, unicorns, mice, birds, flowers, and children contributing to the surreal, whimsical nature of my work. Challenging the boundaries between reality and illusion, the characters find themselves in ever-shifting relationships with each other and with the viewer.
I create these scenes with apprehension and approach painting almost superstitiously. Transferring fears from my mind to the surface becomes an act of courage, a resolution to be free, and an intention to transform my perception of fear. I approach these questions playfully, avoiding overly philosophical or grim responses. Humor plays a central role in my work, offering perspective and creating space to confront fear with lightness. It distances me from the weight of life and death, while also commenting on the absurdity of existence.’

‘Moments of No Return’ by Luke Carlson - @luke_carlson_art
🎨MFA Candidate in Painting (2025)
.
‘Malfunctioning machinery and conspiring creatures cause inconvenience and catastrophe. Cafes, hospitals, and airports act as stages where these public mishaps play out while outdoor spaces provide a more epic setting.
My process is intuitive and self-generating. I use oil paint to convey a sense of magical realism with color, rhythmic shapes, and staccato mark making.
Drawing with charcoal and pastel on unprimed canvas allows for a spontaneous, airy effect. My sketchbook is a springboard for constructing compositions that quickly evolve, revealing one main narrative with smaller vignettes hidden throughout.’

About the Indiana University Painting Guild
The Indiana University Painting Guild is a student-run organization whose primary aim is connecting with the greater Bloomington community via event presence, service, and fundraising. It was founded as a way to solidify community within the Painting program at the university, and to promote artistic engagement through excellence. Our members consist of various artists within the program, both at the MFA and BFA level, and our collective collaboration produces powerful connections in the art world, as evident with our current goal of exhibiting at Chicago Expo. Much like preceding artistic guilds, we forefront and re-define what it means to be a contemporary painter and artist through meetings, discussion, and experimentation. by @iub_paint
