Paintings by Eskenazi faculty member Dominic Mangila went on view Thursday, September 24 at the Armory Show in New York. His works are being presented by the The Drawing Room gallery together with two other Southeast Asian artists: Rirkrit Tiravanija, Tomas Vu.

From the Drawing Room’s newsletter: „Bringing together three distinct practices shaped by histories that move across Southeast Asia and the United States, the presentation reflects on the intersections of politics, memory, identity, and place through painting and sculpture. Rirkrit Tiravanija presents new paintings on newspaper that continue his ongoing inquiry into social disorder, drawing from American political upheaval and global unrest. Tomas Vu debuts paintings and sculptural surfboards that weave together cultural memory, technology, and the enduring influence of David Bowie, where hand-crafted traditions meet visions of the future. Dominic Mangila presents new paintings that revisit the geopolitical legacy of the 1991 Mount Pinatubo eruption alongside imagined underwater landscapes of the contested West Philippine Sea, navigating abstraction through history and lived experience.”

The Armory Show remains on view at the Javits Center through Sunday, September 27 and online until October 4.

Elli Jeffries (BFA ‘28) joined the Eskenazi School Ambassador program last fall to help prospective students with their college selection process. Applying for colleges can be a daunting experience, and Elli’s own selection process inspired her to join the program to make the process less stressful and intimidating for high school students. As an ambassador, Elli participates on current student panels and gives tours of the Fine Arts building to prospective students.

“The job is an absolute delight, and my coworkers and I get to put Eskenazi’s best foot forward,” Elli says.

Elli was recently accepted into the BFA Painting program and will officially start BFA classes in the upcoming fall semester. Last semester, she took Fibers I, where she was able to combine fiber techniques with her watercolor painting. Elli is currently taking a summer painting course to help brush up on painting fundamentals and to refine her personal practice. During her time in the BFA program, Ellie aims to explore themes of nature, environmental collapse/rebirth, ecosystemic horror, and whimsy.

Recent Eskenazi grads Alison Leigh Cofrancesco (MFA, '26, painting) and Hannah Toepp (MFA, '26, photography) are exhibiting their work at the Sheldon Concert Hall and Galleries in St. Louis this summer. Cofrancesco and Toepp were selected from 40 studio visits with third-year MFA candidates across four universities, conducted by the Sheldon’s Gallery Director Paula Lincoln. The exhibitions run from June 12-August 8.

In her paintings, Cofrancesco explores the ethical dilemma of our culture of overconsumption and Toepp translates abstract images captured by a pinhole camera into soft sculptures to soothe anxiety.

Danielle Orchard’s (BFA ‘09) figurative paintings belong to the nation’s premier collections, including the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Phillips Collection. Orchard’s work has been shown in major solo exhibitions in New York, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Seoul, and Shanghai and featured in news outlets from Vogue to The New York Times and Harper’s Bazaar.

Orchard draws inspiration from modern art greats, such as Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse, displaying traits of analytic cubism and saturated colors. Painting through a psychological lens, Orchard paints scenes of everyday life centering around the female body and explores themes of motherhood and the emotional lives of women.

Orchard was awarded the 2026 Eskenazi School Alumni Excellence Award in May for her achievements, leadership, and creativity in figurative art. Marking the Eskenazi School’s first decade, the award recognizes the extent to which the accomplishments of its alumni shape industries, enrich communities, and influence cultural conversations around the world. Luke Allsbrook (BFA ‘95, Studio Art) is the only American artist ever to have served as royal tour artist to the King of England.

In 2005, Allsbrook served as royal tour artist to HM King Charles III (then Prince of Wales), a tradition the king started 40 years ago to document his state tours and to help artists. Allsbrook travelled with the royal staff for five days throughout the San Francisco area of which he painted and sketched scenes. Allsbrook created a landscape painting in Marin County, California, which was included in an exhibition at Buckingham Palace in 2025. Covered on CNN Travel (link in our bio), the exhibition featured other artists that previously served as royal tour artist to HM King Charles III on his state tours to various countries.

Allsbrook’s body of work consists of landscape and seascape paintings, some of which are housed in the collections of The US Department of State, Mercedes Benz, and Christopher Forbes.

You can learn more about Allsbrook’s paintings and accomplishments by visiting his website.

Paintings by Eskenazi School alumnus Ben Cowan (MFA '11) were named among the best of New York's spring art fairs in The Wall Street Journal. "For those who feel that the contemporary art world is awash in the profane," wrote the reviewer, "Mr. Cowan's work offers a taste of the sacred." Follow the link in our bio to read the review.

Eskenazi School assistant professor (Painting) Dominic Mangila currently has six large-scale paintings on exhibit at the HIVE Art Fair in Seoul, South Korea. These paintings explore the potential relationships between the formation of Taal Volcano in the Philippines, quantum physics and painterly abstraction.

Mangila uses abstraction as a material and conceptual “recording apparatus” of his attempts to imagine the Taal Volcano as it has been forming over the past half million years—and how it continues to morph infinitely into the future.

‘Handful’ by Alison Cofrancesco - @alico7187
👛MFA Candidate in Painting (2026)
.
‘Welcome to the world of stuff. In this world, consumer products are hyperavailable and we are able to consume in a number of ways: online, secondhand, ethically, or impulsively. It is easy to feel ambivalent about the things we have with the added context of unfair labor practices, unsustainable materials, and the destructiveness of overconsumption.
This body of work follows a specific character related to myself, who lives through stuff. She is always isolated among her things. She maintains her possessions, and her stories are spurred by stuff. I find it important for her to be alone, without interpersonal connection, but instead only committed to her things. She is independent of others, an American individualist, but also isolated and perhaps lonely. Along with her isolation among her things, she is also often getting into situations that reveal her foibles; making mistakes, or having misfortune befall her. This is compounded by the fact that she is alone, forced to deal with her situation with only the help of her possessions, which isn’t always successful.
She questions how much agency we truly have as we play among things, sifting through the hoard of stuff we can access with such ease.’👛
