The Herron Art Library is pleased to host the work of students from Jordan Munson's N208 course, Sound Objects: Building Generative Sonic Worlds.

Students in the N208 course began by exploring sound as artistic material. They used recording, transformation, time, repetition, and space to create fixed or repeatable sound artworks. These 11 works range widely in form and subject, exploring dread, grief, nostalgia, memory, surveillance, the life cycle, and more.

Now, students are taking the next step: transforming their ideas into interactive, responsive, and generative systems that reconsider the relationship between artist, artwork, audience, and environment.

Listen to the complete collection now in the Herron Art Library (located in one of the study carrels). Encounter the resulting Project 2 sound installations throughout Eskenazi Hall, October 13–15, 2026.
Artists & Works include:
Aren Chynoweth - two rooms
Lilly Garcia - untitled
Jamie Gish - and when it finds you.
Bria Harris - a sense of fear
Lauren McDonald - What’s Your Balance?
Phoebe Neace - Between Arrivals
Jalen Poole - untitled
Trevor Rainbolt - Extant Ars
Juls Serowik - Wandering Mind While Developing

If you've wandered the halls of Herron, you might notice a limestone scultpure of a bison. The 1,200 pound locally sourced stone sculpture was created by Brown County-based artist William A. Galloway. "Bison of North America" was commissioned by the INB Financial Corp., now part of J.P. Morgan Chase, in 1992. The sculpture then found its way on the terrace of the @eiteljorgmuseum until it officially became part of the museum's collection in 1998.

At some point, the scultpure became affectionately known as Buffy the Bison, not to be confused with the vampire slayer. The series debuted one year prior to its acquisition, which could be the reason for the nickname, or beacuse it is a shortened name for a buffalo.
The museum deaccessioned the sculpture in the past year to serve as a reference tool for the school's sculpture department in addition to honoring the former logo for INB, IU Bloomington's mascot, and the State of Indiana.

We're happy to say that Buffy has found a home here right at Herron!

Welcome Herronites, whether that be if you are new or returning!
A "Herronite" dates to the early 1920s which refers to students, faculty, and staff relating to @iuiherron. The term became an identity and term of endearment amongst friends, peers, and colleagues.
Here's to an exciting 2026-2027 academic year!

Today marks the 100th birthday of Betye Saar, the notable Black female assemblage artist, who passed away on Sunday, July 26th. She excelled in mixed media by incorporating found objects, drawings, collage, and printmaking into her work. Common themes of her work explored feminism, mysticism and spirituality, and the Black identity.

Saar visited Herron in October 1984 to give a lecture in conjunction with a traveling exhibit titled "The Artist and the Quilt." She collaborated with fellow artist and friend, Judy Mathieson, to create "Fantasies," 1981 (included in the exhibition).

Much of Betye Saar's work is held within many permanent collections throughout the United States as well as internationally. Rest in Peace and Power, Betye.

We asked. Students answered. 🗒️✨ We invited our students to share how they really feel about their library — one Post-it note at a time. Here's how they completed the thought: "My library…" 💛
