These are just a few of the over 800 artists’ books that make up the Herron Art Library’s Fine Press and Book Arts Collection at IU Indianapolis.

And unlike art on a museum wall, most of these works are meant to be opened, have their pages turned or unfolded, and be explored by viewers.

“It’s a really important conversation starter,” Huddle said. “The artists’ books are works of art that attract people to the library. It starts with ‘Look at this cool object we have,’ and ends with a conversation about all of the other resources we offer at the library.”

As Hispanic Heritage Month comes to a close, we’re celebrating with our final student highlight featuring Ilse Peña-Lopez. Swipe to see artwork by one of our talented students and learn more about Ilse! ✨

How does your artwork reflect your heritage?

“It’s hard to notice my heritage being shown in my work because it’s not straightforward, but I’ll say it’s more about the themes that I create that reflect my heritage. Some Mexican mythology and urban legends, caring about our planet, and colors are some parts of my culture that I feel are reflected in my work. Especially color! I can’t do anything without color or at least try to incorporate it somehow! Even on occasion, some of my pieces of work can have Mexican food incorporated either as the subject or a background piece. While it’s subtle, tiny influences of my heritage, such as the food, the stories, or the colors, are very much reflected in my artwork, just like how it’s reflected in me as a person. I think the best way I can put it is if I were a holiday, it would be Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos); it has memory, nostalgia, (vibrant) colors, and food!” — Ilse Peña-Lopez

Here’s a look at artwork by another one of our talented students is celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. Swipe to learn more about Hayden Serrano and see his work! ✨

How does your artwork reflect your heritage?

“Growing up, I was always taught to be Independent and self-reliant. My mom always stressed that success meant hard work. I try to learn from others’ mistakes and use the resources around me to have as little waste as possible. Sometimes I find it hard to relate fully to either of my races. When your race is split, it’s easy to feel like you aren’t enough of either. Yet still I am, so I try to focus on being true to myself and my values. I get a unique perspective of the world, and I’m thankful for that; I try to reflect that in my art.” — Hayden Serrano

A HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to Robert Horvath, Associate Professor of Painting, for earning the Juried Grand Prize at ArtPrize 2026. 👏

His installation, Room for Lost Paradise, was exhibited in one of the nation’s most prestigious art competitions. The Juried Grand Prize is the competition’s highest honor and comes with a $100,000 award.

We are so proud to have Horvath as part of our faculty, and we are excited to see how his contributions continue to shape our painting program and inspire the success of our students.

How does your artwork reflect your heritage?

“My personal artwork has large parts of Native Mexican culture who I am connected to on my dad’s side and things like games, tv shows, and food that I had growing up. I also like to include Spanish in my work because it is incredibly important to continue using my native language, even in my work!” — Sam Martinez

This isn’t just about the final design outcome. It’s about conversations, shared cultures, unexpected ideas, laughter, and building real connections across the world, a little like bringing the experience of a study-abroad exchange right to your screen.
