“Sunlight on the Sea Floor,” a traveling exhibition curated by Paula Naughton and Marina Reyes Franco, is on display at Herron School of Art and Design through Oct. 31. Herron is the first stop on its tour after a run at Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Puerto Rico in San Juan.

The exhibition takes its title from Derek Walcott’s poem “The Sea Is History” and addresses colonialism, militarization, migration and displacement. It opens with an orange drawn from the flag of the Chagossian people, who were evicted from the Chagos Islands.

An accordion modified with paint. 🎨

A book with text that can only be seen under a black light. 🔦

A playable cardboard music box. 🎶

These are just a few of the over 800 artists’ books that make up the Herron Art Library’s Fine Press and Book Arts Collection at IU Indianapolis.

And unlike art on a museum wall, most of these works are meant to be opened, have their pages turned or unfolded, and be explored by viewers.

“It’s a really important conversation starter,” Huddle said. “The artists’ books are works of art that attract people to the library. It starts with ‘Look at this cool object we have,’ and ends with a conversation about all of the other resources we offer at the library.”

Help rebuild Indiana’s only president, Benjamin Harrison. President Harrison was remembered & celebrated in statue form at our beloved Presidential Site at 12th & Delaware.
Unfortunately, this piece of public art was destroyed by a senseless act of vandalism. Together, we will bring this piece of art back to life:

The Herron Art Library is pleased to host the work of students from Jordan Munson's N208 course, Sound Objects: Building Generative Sonic Worlds.

Students in the N208 course began by exploring sound as artistic material. They used recording, transformation, time, repetition, and space to create fixed or repeatable sound artworks. These 11 works range widely in form and subject, exploring dread, grief, nostalgia, memory, surveillance, the life cycle, and more.

Now, students are taking the next step: transforming their ideas into interactive, responsive, and generative systems that reconsider the relationship between artist, artwork, audience, and environment.

Listen to the complete collection now in the Herron Art Library (located in one of the study carrels). Encounter the resulting Project 2 sound installations throughout Eskenazi Hall, October 13–15, 2026.

The Plates Between Us is an international design exchange workshop bringing together students from United World Institute of Design (UID), Karnavati University, India and Herron School of Art + Design, Indiana University Indianapolis, USA.

This isn’t just about the final design outcome. It’s about conversations, shared cultures, unexpected ideas, laughter, and building real connections across the world, a little like bringing the experience of a study-abroad exchange right to your screen.
