Save the date: join us on 11 October at Ca’Buccari (@ca.buccari) in Venice for a screening of two documentary films and a conversation with filmmaker Taras Spivak.

“Under Security Guarantees: Footage from Ukraine” is a screening presented as part of the public programme of the Pavilion of Ukraine. It brings together two documentary films by members of the Kinotron Group (@kinotron.group): “Under the Sign of Anchor” (2024) by Taras Spivak (@spivak_t) and “Special Operation” (2025) by Oleksiy Radynski (@oleksiy.radynski).

The films trace two moments in the country’s history, from the collapse of the Soviet Union and the disarmament of independent Ukraine to the Russian occupation of the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant in 2022. Working with archival footage, they explore questions of ideology and militarisation.

The screening will be followed by a conversation with Taras Spivak, moderated by the curators of the Pavilion’s public programme, Ivanna Kozachenko (@ivankaroco) and Katia Khimei (@katia_khimei).

We are extremely happy to announce that our new issue, Solomiya No.6—State of the Nation, is available for pre-order! Reserve your copy in Ukraine and internationally at a reduced price of 16€ (18€) / 700₴ (800₴) until September 4, 2026.

We started thinking about this issue at the 61st Venice Biennale, a place built around dialogue between nations. Yet again and again, conversations about art and politics returned to national identity: who belongs, who speaks for a nation, and whose solidarity counts. The return of the Israeli and Russian pavilions brought protests and solidarity movements, but these movements often remained separated from one another. Meanwhile, Russia’s attacks on Ukrainian cities continue to intensify, with negotiations still out of reach. We began asking what happens when the nation becomes the main language through which we understand politics.

State of the Nation looks at nationalism as something so familiar that it can become almost invisible, connecting experiences that do not fit neatly into national categories: migration, uncertainty about the future of the war, contested identities, and forms of solidarity that cross borders. Across the issue, these questions take us through nationalist traditions in postwar Germany, counter-mapping in the ancient Mediterranean, solidarities between Estonians and Russophone Estonians in Narva, new approaches to artistic mentorship in Ghana, reflections at Ukraine’s national Minute of Silence, and others.

Pre-order via the link in bio!

24.07 — 19:00
25.07 — 20:00
26.07 — 21:00

On 26th July ICKRA will host the public discussion “State of exceptions: emerging solidarities”.

The attempt to deal with local crises necessitates the emergence of new solidarities. But this demand for solidarity seldom accounts for the exceptional experiences of the oppressed.

Does solidarity by default imply a mutual response? How could one trace its artificialness or campness? Is true solidarity possible?

The speakers:
Borys Filonenko
Michał Murawski
Nino (Vanga) Mikashavidze

Moderator:
Ivanna Kozachenko

Ukrainian Pavilion: The Origami Deer by Zhanna Kadyrova On the Way to Venice.

The sculpture by artist Zhanna Kadyrova (@jannkad) is traveling across Europe to La Biennale di Venezia (@labiennale), originating from Pokrovsk, Donetsk region.

In 2019, it was installed in Yuvileyniy Park in Pokrovsk, on the site of a dismantled Soviet jet ‘Su-7’ aircraft that once carried nuclear weapons. Amid the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the sculpture has been temporarily displaced, raising questions about the unfulfilled security guarantees Ukraine relied on when giving up its nuclear arsenal in 1996. Analogous to these guarantees, which existed only on paper, the paper-inspired sculpture now exists suspended between safety and uncertainty.

The Origami Deer will be presented in six European cities:

📍Warsaw — 8 March
📍Vienna — 10 March
📍Prague — 12 March
📍Berlin — 13-14 March
📍Brussels — 18-19 March
📍Paris — 23 March

Each venue will host a programme of film screenings, discussions, and musical performances, providing a comprehensive engagement with the Security Guarantees project.

Curators of the public programme: @katia_khimei, @ivankaroco

📌Save the date for your city.

The project is implemented with the support of the Ministry of Сulture of Ukraine (@mincultukraine), UNESCO (@unesco), and Sushko Philanthropy (@sushko.philanthropy). Media partners: Suspilne Kultura (@suspilne.culture), Radio Kultura, Artslooker (@artslooker).

The exhibition After Now – Navigating Peace, created as a collaboration between @solomiyamag and the Goethe Institutes in BiH and in Ukraine, is visible until the 3rd of December in the Art and Media Lab of the Goethe Institute Sarajevo, which originally served as a shelter. It unites works by Volodymyr Prylutskyi, Sam Lewitt, Roman Khimey, Yarema Malashchuk, and Bojan Stojčić.

The exhibition and discussions in Sarajevo served as a reflection on the aftermath of the Dayton Agreements, as well as on both Ukrainian and Bosnian experiences of resistance and the ability to imagine futures. A central point of the conversation was a translocal understanding of agency in peacemaking processes, often trapped in the endless corridors of state institutions.

@ivankaroco

@tretiyja taken in Kyiv, Ukraine by @ivankaroco

Владислав Плісецький @plisetskiy

Джерело х Іскра @ickpakyiv
2025
