I can enjoy a game of chess, even if it’s with an 8 year old. Him and all the other kids who played chess in a poorly lit, often smokey, little coffee house, always came prepared. Lit, or not, this room produced more regional and National champions than any other house in Ethiopia(might be a stretch). These kids spared no one and rightfully so. Their coach was a animated, vocal, and direct man who did not accept failure. How could he? His 14 year old daughter was a repeat champion, one of the brightest students in town, and his 9 year old son was looking to win his first tournament. Word around town was that champions could earn a chance to play at the world stage. For these kids, that’s a once in a life time opportunity. So I understood when he would hover; I understood why the room was nearly pitch black; I understood why he only allowed a few in at a time. It was to accustom them to what he believed to be absolute concentration-discipline. No one else believed in these kids the way he did and not many were thinking outside of the conventional. I was privileged to have experienced this, and take a few Ls. It was a humbling experience that would always be capped off with some tea and ambasha! Hey, we all won in my eyes!

Aging is beautiful! There are few certainties in life and one of those is death, however that may come is uncertain, but if provided with the fortune to walk life into old age consider yourself privileged to be filled with life. “At some point you will become the person you were supposed to be, whether you wanted to or not.” That is a tough pill to swallow, but at some point you have to accept where you are and the reasons why, better sooner than later. Stay blessed!

This chapter of life has been one of my favorites. It’s not perfect & it’s definitely not always easy but these moments remind me of what really really matters. @ivanstamba I think we’re doing something right. by @ivanstamba

Batter up! It’s phenomenal having kids learn new skills and experiences that will provide different opportunities.

Baseball isn’t a new concept but for many around the world it is and the best way to encourage the growth is through showing support!
