POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

You win some you lose some. It’s the story of life and the sooner you learn it the more successful you’ll be in the things you care most about.

This was a botched handoff and one I will never forget, it’s kind of hard to forget these things. Rather than giving up, I grabbed the stick and took off. Rather than @dj_relay slowing down and calling it quits, we got the stick off.

It was eventually a DQ for zone violation, but we got the stick around. Track is funny in that you literally have one short opportunity to make the most of things…otherwise it’s missed. Having a short memory in the sport is difficult but you have to accept, adapt, and adjust.

The past couple of years have taught us a lot about the power of teamwork, through trial and error, miscommunication, lack of funds, etc., having a community (and communities) believe in your cause makes every step worth it. Despite the trials and errors, here are some 2023 takeaways;

1. Communicate with your team:
Being open and having transparent communication is key when working with any team, especially with a team that’s scattered across continents. Establish a supportive environment where everyone feels comfortable expressing their thoughts and concerns, even if it means rejecting ideas.

2. Work with what you have:
Recognize the limitations and constraints, and find creative ways to work within those parameters. Do you have a particular budget and you’re short of it? Find a way to make it happen by utilizing existing resources efficiently and identifying alternative solutions when faced with limitations. Be adaptable!

3. Document everything:
Keep detailed records of your interactions, initiatives, and outcomes. Not only does this allow something to fall back on but it is essential for assessing the effectiveness of the efforts, identifying areas for improvement, and demonstrating the impact of your work to stakeholders and funders.

4. Keep the community at the forefront of your outcomes:
Constantly remind yourself and your team that the ultimate goal is to benefit the community. By maintaining a community-centered approach, you ensure that your efforts align with the genuine needs of those you are working to support.

5. Have faith:
Perseverance often requires a strong belief in the positive impact that your work can have. Working in Africa, like anywhere, comes with accepting certain setbacks. Have faith in your team, keep the community in mind, and the potential for major changes. Celebrate small victories, learn from setbacks, and remain committed to your mission.

We trust the process and hope to connect with all of you along the way!

We had the privilege of working with three schools to facilitate the Menstrual Health and Hygiene project, in collaboration with The Change Society Needs (@change_society_needs) and Integrity Youth Forum Uganda (@integrityyouthforumug).

Special thanks to the dedicated administrators at St. Lawrence High School, just outside of Fort Portal, where we successfully conducted our final Menstrual Health and Hygiene program. This program educated high school girls and boys about women's menstrual health, sanitation, and care, while also teaching them how to create and maintain reusable menstrual pads.

Our initial goal was to impact 1000 students this year, and though we fell just short of that, we are looking ahead to the next year with determination to meet our target, with the help of those who want to make a difference. We want to express our heartfelt gratitude to our previous donors for their invaluable support.

Thank you!

Ivan admits he's struggled to connect the moustache to the chin hair but this is the year of the beard. He's an English education volunteer serving in Ethiopia and serving looks everywhere he and the crew go. .

Get yourself a hiking crew that offers nothing but positivity and laughs.

Side Note: I’m trying to channel my inner Indiana Jones on this trip...if he was around today, he’d also rock some Nikes. I don’t want to argue.
Buenos Dias!

“Breath by breath, let go of fear, expectation, anger, regret, cravings, frustration, fatigue. Let go of the need for approval. Let go of old judgments and opinions. Die to all that, and fly free.”
— Lama Surya Das
