Some of my Recent Type work.

Recently I have been expanding a cut of Pine Gothic and smoothing out Pine Grotesque.

Harkers Gothic grew from a mixture between a personal project and tweaking my gothic typeface, Although the secondary cut, Clarendon, is really only Clarendon capitals, with heavily inspired lowercase sans cuts of Clarendon letterforms, it was important to maintain a familiar flow as the Sans held when read. (A similar off-set weight distribution, heavier capitals & unregulated kerning). The pairing under the one family was to complement and achieve a more uniform *still robust, display typeface for a branding project.

Pine Grotesque just needed some slight tweaks, I have been working on expanding the ligature sets, smoothing lowercase curves, improved legibility in smaller print, general letterform width & some general kerning. by @ivanupex

Onslow Arboretum

I’ve always loved nature, trees and animals, so to find out there is an Arboretum near me, I became excited! I went to visit and was struggling to see the type of trees? A small 3x4 plaque in big standard myriad pro. I was bewildered, how can such a beautiful place be ignored?

I decided to create a brand focusing on way finding, I wanted to bring back discovery by making people search for the information rather then it all be at a single glance. The plaques work as a standard tag on the tree, while hidden facts are dotted on the branches, nearby shrubs or close by.

A visual identity system followed alongside the way finding, a quick bold brand rooted in traditional type and standard systems. taken in Onslow Village by @ivanupex

Menna Jayne Beauty

I’ve been sat on this project for a while, I was commissioned to create a bespoke visual identity + typeface for a beauty brand, that focuses on micro-blading and semi permanent makeup.

Through early research I was fascinated in these grid-like systems that the beauty artists use to ensure the perfect eyebrow for the face, I instantly made the connection with type and started experimenting with rigid, angular text systems. The client of the get-go wanted to create a brand that stood out, that wasn’t like a conventional beauty brand. So it was important I kept the values of the business but showcased them through and alternate viewing.

As well as the identity, I developed a bold display typeface to sit alongside the brand, used across the social media and word-marks, which is lowercase and uppercase, with several different stylistic sets.

Overall, the full brand package was a pleasure to work on, and was amazing to showcase how a strong identity can be rooted by experimental type systems. Long live type. by @ivanupex

WIP Pine Gothic

Some work in progress for my first official typeface release. Inspired by old Soul Posters, American Woodletters but more importantly culture and history. I want to show the rhythm and impact from soul gospel music throughout the letterforms. Blending both traditional and historically accurate glyphs with sharp ink traps and uneven weight distribution.

Still a few weeks out of the initial release but I thought I’d show you guys some examples, italics and diacritics coming next! by @ivanupex

New Atlas Type Specimen

I wanted to design a type specimen, I had this itch, but which one? Maybe was going to try for one that I have created, Helvellyn or Gothic, but I felt like I already had to much of an influence over the type. I was scrolling Adobe Fonts and I stumbled across a beautiful serif font - New Atlas by @newlynfoundry

Is I read a blog created about the history and inspiration behind the type, it told the story that the type itself grew from the type specimens, this information was key in crafting this short piece. I wanted to display the text in a manner which was applicable to the 1900’s, the text tells the story of the foundry and history of foundry’s in England.

Done on old vintage paper using string binding.

This project was just a fun little personal project for me. by @ivanupex

Nightstand Bookshop, NYC

I decided to take part in @creativebloom brief competition, in which I created this identity for a New York book store, the difference is, it only opens at night, doors open at 8pm and shut when the last customer is ready to leave. My approach aims to capture the area’s history and culture, while reinterpreting it through a contemporary visual system.

I decided to approach this a little differently, rather then falling into the cliche, cosy, nighttime brand, I wanted to be conscious of the environment and the story I was telling, Lower East side is full of 80’s/90’s neon lights and busy type banners, which inspired by the type system.

While not wanting to make night workers, insomniac’s feel more disconnected, I wanted to create an identity that normalises night-time workers, insomniacs or nocturnal people within the wider reading community.

Church House

A project 8 hours ago that didn’t exist, I was on my morning walk and found this beautiful perspective warped lettering on the front of a community space/ church. I felt inspired and decided to digitise and typographically correct the whole idea, and mix it with a bright bold identity. This whole project took me 4 hours from start to finish!

The workmark was altered slightly into a subtle serif, rather then being the sans serif it is, I added the elements of the original mark through the S and C mainly, keeping its originality. It’s always important to myself how well the whole brand integrates within itself, the bold type is used as anchor in some of the assets, to stretch the screen and create wide space for alternative assets.

The scrambled type patterns were inspired from the frantic events and people that visit community centres, no one is the same, this is reflect across different apparel which it often describes what the product is. by @ivanupex

Gothic .590

Inspired by the early Gospel-Soul posters that populated the America’s in the 1920’s, Gothic. 590 takes inspiration from the imperfections in American Wood type and characterised this through irregular forms.

From the pages of a 1900 American Wood Type specimen to the screen, brought many different challenges, understanding the balance between weight distribution, irregular forms and mixed white-spacing, all of this together has created a versatile typeface that can community culture and history through its letters.

I loved this project (Still got some letters to expand on, and accents to complete), I was able to step away from the mathematical approach I have to type and was able to forget these consistencies, and go ‘Ham’. by @ivanupex

Helvellyn

A few stills of my new typeface!

Helvellyn is a type project I embarked on to create a display typeface for Transport for Cumbria, the condensed black letterforms were inspired by the Lake District, which is an important identity for Cumbrians.

The results bring a bold, contemporary typeface which can be represented through digital and physical media, the simple grotesk-style letterforms allow a sense of character without disruption the flow of text.

The typeface offers its self with language support of 32 languages, open type features and custom glyphs, allowing for customisation across the field. The characters come not just from the letterforms themselves but from the Lakes, the people and the stories in Cumbria.
