You’re allowed to skip the baby shower. Yes, really.

If you’ve ever sat in your car outside an event, trying to talk yourself into going because you didn’t want to “make it weird”... I see you. I’ve been there. I’ve quietly excused myself at my friend’s baby shower after our first round of IVF completely failed. I was fine until she opened #a diaper pail of all things. At which time, I locked eyes with my S.O. and stepped back from the group. I’ve, also, ducked into empty conference rooms on numerous occassions, locked the door and broke down, attempting to make it through the day with some sense of normalcy.

“No, thank you” is a full sentence. And you can choose not to explain the why to people who haven’t walked this road.

You do not owe anyone a play-by-play, but do find your community. They don’t need an explanation. They get it. They’ve lived it. And if you don’t have a community - HI! One thing about this journey is it makes you hyper vigilant of how you feel. Refraining from researching through Google university can be incredibly difficult. I’m not sure where this myth of “IVF is only a 3 months” came from, but that is not generally the case, unless you don’t run into any road blocks. If that is you, WHEW! I am envious 🥹 this week’s mantra is repeating that every step is progress. Notice I did not say forward. Sometimes this journey is one step forward, two steps back. But if you are learning, accepting, grieving, and/or pivoting, it’s progress. You'll find that this journey is generally MUCH longer than you anticipated. You've waited the 6 months to year before you can officially "seek" help, then guided towards IVF. You think you can start next month... That is often not the case.

This process is based on where your body is at, how it reacts to different variables, doctor's schedules, and more. More often than not, this is not a linear process and there are very few easy solutions. So what do you do?

You pick up a grandmacore hobby. Think calming puzzles, knitting, and walking malls! You're need a hobby that is relaxing and is FAR FROM doomscrolling. You stay away from those rabbit holes! Seriously, stop it. Grandmacore hobbies will help the mental spin of it all.

And my hobby? It was walking, sourdough, and embroidering. I've made quite a few very intricate Christmas stockings. Don't know if you've heard but homemade Christmas is making a comeback! #ivfgotthis #ivfjourney #ivfgotquestions #ivfsupport #ivf by @ivf_gotquestions

Y’know, it’s pretty emotional as I begin work again on this hot air balloon stocking. I began embroidering the Santa plane stocking in late 2022 to pass the time during fertility treatments. I only worked on these stockings during the weeks or days of treatments. I finished 3 stockings and I started this journey not knowing how to embroider.

Now, 4 years later I’m back embroidering, hoping to finish our baby’s stocking before Christmas. It’s been an insane journey getting here and not one I’d wish on anyone… but it worked. Thank God for science. And in that time I built a website and a company helping others navigate through IVF (IVFGotQuestions.com) by @ivf_gotquestions

You can hold two truths at once. And, they may seem contradictory: jealousy & joy, happiness & sadness, or disappointment & hope. But they aren’t contradictory. Life can be bittersweet and much of that can be because you’re on different timeline than your loved ones around you. It’s hard to not compare your journey with others. But this journey is your own.
