As darkness fades in the west, forms around me begin to shift into shapes that my senses recognize. I start to trust my eyes again. Bird songs unfurl. Shadows from branches begin to dance in tree tops as the East comes to life with the sun. For a time the air cools, until the light stretches down to warm up the ground. I know it's isn't long for the warmth to reach my fingertips. And so I watch. Poised. The forest has come alive and I am her witness.

Portraits of a coupla dirls just spent ten days in the Strawberry Wilderness. Exhausted. Exhilarated. Ready for a long, hot shower 🌲

Many of you have messaged me asking about LooOooSeY. I don't really understand reels and I couldn't fit the words I have around her, and the reel, in the space so it went into the captions and got lost for many of you. So you can swipe to read 💔💔💔

I also don't understand a life without her. My puff was made up of a million bits of perfect angel baby...and my world with her not by my side will not ever be the same.

Many of the last 16 days I can barely breathe.

I love and miss you so much, Bug ❤️❤️❤️

Self portrait of a woman who knows considerably more about pigeon fever, bacterial toxins, abscesses, and tissue necrosis than she ever wanted to.

Turns out the bacterium responsible for pigeon fever produces a toxin remarkably similar to one found in brown recluse spider venom. Different organisms. Similar biochemical weapons.

I’d have much preferred the luxury of remaining ignorant.

Sending much love to all the horses out there, and their people, who are dealing with this monster of a situation ❤️‍🩹

This summer has been full. Really full. Work, miles, deadlines, horses, people I love, and more shuffled living packed into a few months than I can wrap my head around.

As I move into the next season, my intention is getting really simple: slow down and make more room for quality time.

I’ve always loved creating little sacred spots full of intention wherever I land. A morning with my horses. Time with my family and friends. Being fully inside the moments with the people I love. Those are the pieces that make all the miles and madness worth it.

And now I want to make just a little more room around those beautiful moments. More quality time in all the places, and with all the people and animals, that I love. Less of it all feeling like a mad shuffle.

And for the love of gawd, clean out my damned cars and streamline my car closets. 😂 by @iwanderwild

I believe with my whole heart in being connected to the food we put into our bodies— both on a physical and a spiritual level. I wish, for the good of humanity, for the good of the earth, and for the good of the animals, that we could all find our way back to a direct relationship with what we eat. To know where it came from. To understand that something gave its life so that ours could sustain. To feel gratitude for that instead of distance from it.

If you know me, you know that I don’t participate in the commercial animal/food industry. I’m a multi-generational ethical hunter. Hunting feels ancestral to me—something passed down through blood and generations—it also feels like an incredible privilege.

There is an intimacy in walking into the backcountry knowing that, depending on how things align, l will carry the weight of my choice myself. I will look at it. Touch it. Thank it. Carry it out. And it will feed me for a very long time. I find a difficult honesty in that.

The last couple of years, though, I’ve had this peripheral whisper of uncertainty that I haven’t quite been able to shake. It’s no secret that many of us as Oregonians question the way our wildlife is being managed. Predator numbers feel too high for what our wild populations can sustainably carry. I’ve seen the pressure firsthand. I’ve walked hundreds and hundreds of miles through the backcountry over the last decade. I’ve watched things change. And now our wild animals are facing faster, larger and more frequent wildland fires, drought, and habitat and migratory challenges. Pressure from so many directions.

Sometimes I find myself wondering when they get to just be. And rest.

Somewhere in there, the thing that has always felt so unquestionably right to me started asking me a question. Not necessarily should I stop hunting? More like: what does it mean to honor these animals now?

Today is opening day of what would typically be my hunting season. I didn’t draw any tags this year. Instead, I bought half a beef from my dear bud, @lighthorsecattleco

Times are expensive.

In dollars. In energy. In pieces of ourselves we didn’t realize we were spending. It feels like there’s a collective exhaustion and grief right now, hanging over everything like a low fog. So much feels uncertain. So much is being lost—things we love, things we thought would always be here, pieces of the world we assumed someone would protect.

There’s a heaviness in watching it all change faster than we can make sense of, and in surrendering to all the things that simply don’t make any sense. Some seasons just cost more than others. This one feels particularly expensive.

My summer is coming to a wrap. It’s been a summer of mostly work, really—catching glimpses of the world when I have a minute. Putting intentional time into the things I love and hold dear when I have another.
I’m ready to rest.

And Falkor… he just keeps consistently showing up and reminding me to stay adaptable, stay flexible… and stay radically patient.

In a perfect world....I would have a shower.

I spent a fair amount of time in my twenties showering out of a hose. Peanut was a baby and I was young and desperate to own a warmblood. I lived in a raggedy ol pole barn and showered out of a hose to make that happen.

It’s still about Peanut. I want her with me. Or in this case, I want to be where she is. And that means sacrifice whilst I look for a place for us to call home. I’ve been looking for a long time. Years in fact. And it hasn’t gotten any better out there.

My life set me up well for these sacrifices, though. I’ve been a nomad for about as long as I can remember. Between pole barns and #vanlife…I am radically adaptable.

But Lord help me I’m ready to own a shower. And a couch 🤣 by @iwanderwild
