Perrotin New York is pleased to announce an exhibition by Japanese artist Izumi Kato, opening on October 28.

The exhibition will present suspended and freestanding sculptures alongside paintings composed of canvases in varying sizes, creating a distinctly sculptural sense of rhythm. This latest body of work, realized between 2025 and 2026, features Kato’s signature enigmatic humanoid figures, known as ‘hitogata’. With minimal distinguishing features, these figures exist between the familiar and the otherworldly, inviting viewers to bring their own interpretations to the work.

The exhibition coincides with the artist’s monumental commission for the @hirshhorn Museum’s Sculpture Garden, reopening on October 31.

Join us on October 28 from 5–8pm for the opening celebration at Perrotin New York!

Japanese artist Izumi Kato and Fundación Casa Wabi are pleased to announce the third open-call 6-week residency prize for two emerging Japanese artists, by nationality or born in Japan (ages 20 to 40), living and working in Japan, interested in cultural cross-pollination, and wishing to have a dialogue with the communities around Casa Wabi in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, Mexico.

This prize was established by Kato’s desire to make it possible for young Japanese creators in all genres, such as fine art, design, music, etc., to experience the residency program at Fundación Casa Wabi.

Every Casa Wabi resident is required to develop, lead, and complete a collaborative project in one of the communities surrounding Casa Wabi. These community projects are intended to create a dialogue and mutually beneficial relationship between the artist and the community. With the guidance of the Foundation’s team, the artist will create a meaningful project in which shared knowledge and horizontal collaboration are the main focus.

This year’s judges are Azusa Hashimoto and Andrea Bustillos Duhart.

Azusa Hashimoto @azusa_curatorialworks

Andrea Bustillos Duhart @andrea.bustillos.duhart

She recently led a program to support the Creative and Cultural Industries in Mexico and curated the 6th edition of the Terremoto Auction. Punta Pájaros, where less is more, sits on the Oaxacan coast about thirty minutes west of Puerto Escondido. Eleven villas by Alberto Kalach on six acres that were farmed bare until 2012, replanted as forest by Luis Urrutia, the environmental engineer who owns it and who is also Bosco Sodi’s cousin. Kalach is also building the new Escondido airport to support more direct flights. Casa Wabi is also next door.

The villas sit on pine pilotis so the ground runs uninterrupted underneath, with macuil floors, tzalam doors and louvers instead of glass, so the waves are omnipresent. About ninety-five percent of the power is solar. Luis puts it plainly: “the furniture is nice, the mattress and sheets are nice, but the point of of Punta Pájaros is to reconnect with nature.”

At 6pm the wood-fired sauna is where you want to be, then the plunge into the concrete pool. La Palapa serves what came out of the water that morning, and the wine on the table is the family’s own, Alto de Pioz, from the vineyard outside Madrid that is currently constructing an 8 key hotel by who else but Tadao Ando. Down the road, Meridiano, by Axel Vervoordt, recently featured work by Izumi Kato, and several of his painted stones now stand at the Punta Pájaros entrance.

Izumi Kato's exhibition closed this past Sunday, June 28, and with it, Meridiano closes for the season.

Over five months, the light moved across these works the way it moves across the coast itself: low and lateral in winter, warmer and more diffuse through spring, and now giving way to the first rains of summer. The suspended hitogata above our oculus, the stone figures, the watchful bronzes— each held its quiet conversation with this space, season after season.

Thank you to Izumi Kato for the vision and generosity behind this exhibition, and to everyone who visited, returned, and looked closely. Meridiano will reopen in January 2027.
