WORK IN PROGRESS// I came here for graphic design hoping to design books, but over the past 3 years away from home, my nostalgia, my grief for loved ones, my exhaustion from grief snowballed in an unstoppable force that makes me make what I make now.
Everything is making sense to me at this moment.
Before I existed, my late maternal grandparents were organising Taoist ceremonies in their neighbourhood, ones that were informal and independent from temples. These ceremonies often take place in temporary large scale tents held by metal structures usually placed in the middle of a grass field. I used to attend some of these gatherings as a young child and had always been fascinated with how everything came together to create an atmosphere of sacredness. It was a spatial composition of pure and compromised use of materials;Plywood planks that had been reused to the point of wear as floors, shiny red chairs and tables wrapped in plastic scattered across the hall. The tangki ceremonies would evoke the most out of me - watching the spirit medium trance himself into a vessel of a God or deity. I have small memories, telling the medium my name and doing non-verbal prayers asking for good grades and good health my for family. I never truly classify them as religious experiences then as it was just as it is in its own vitality, it was only a way to communicate to other people for their imagination. Being away from home, somehow led me feeling more closer to my late grandmother who was left in the island port by her opium addicted father๐Ÿซฉ Beyond just beliefs, the diasporic feelings and wondering heightens everything in you to want to feel belong, that I sometimes think was charging those ceremonies, I imagine. Those sensibilities absolutely came from somewhere responding to an environment that was rapidly changing. Though, it is different for me as I have the privilege of mobility, my grandma didnโ€™t even if she was curious. Iโ€™d just like to think that I am making art within that threshold of vitality Iโ€™ve experience in moments like those ceremonies, regardless of anyoneโ€™s classification. by @j2mel002

Featuring a crater conjoined with an upside down pond, the work creates a landscape drawn from the artistโ€™s personal mythology. ๐˜ˆ ๐˜š๐˜ต๐˜ข๐˜ณ ๐˜•๐˜ข๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฅ ๐˜—๐˜ฆ๐˜ญ๐˜ท๐˜ช๐˜ด explores self-reconciliation through inversionโ€”often associated with sinister or demonological themesโ€”reimagined as a symbol of resurrection and purity. Signaling in its title, the installation makes anatomical connections with trauma, as โ€˜information stored in the bodyโ€™.ย ย

The work builds on the concept of โ€œFemale Hysteria,โ€ a historical diagnosis used ambiguously to pathologize women exhibiting symptoms of PTSD, depression, or infertility. In The Aetiology of Hysteria, Freud found out that hysteria often stems from repressed childhood sexual abuse, though he later retracted his findings due to personal, social, and political pressures.

Examining structural violence through a critical lens, the work antagonises The Joker, through depicting his decapitated head as a representation of his mental disorders and the evils he committed. The work seeks to voice a sentimentality beyond psychoanalytical and cultural frameworks, reclaiming personhood.

beheaded joker, a feather made out of human hair as part of

I was looking into goddess, Chinnamasta, (She whose head is severed) which led to my journey of finding more about the decapitated head in mythologies and in history, I was referencing the image of Yukio Mishima severed head that I came across on the internet and my mind was immediately drawn to the joker by @j2mel002
