It will happen again...(Cronulla)
700x700mm
Acrylic and Aerosol on board.
2017

I made this painting after id had a bit of time to sit with the cronulla Riots.
In a country with a long history of dark days.... This was still a dark day. It was like holding up a neon sign for the future we were heading into, nationalism and bigotry becoming mainstream.
Many people arent aware of the correlation between capitalism and fascism, they see these isolated incidents as "things getting a bit out of hand" i stead of what they really are, a reaction to the systemic issues we collectively face.
Like many places in coastal Australia, Cronulla underwent a massive shift, from a blue collar working town to a Gentrified hotspot... Even though this was downward pressure being put on the Community from the top.. through media bias and political fuckery, the blame for Cronulla becoming "out of reach" for many of its, often multi-generational inhabitants, was squarely levelled at Migrants and "others".
In classic Australian amnesia fashion, the people who are fooled by this chicanery and ended up being the antagonists on this fatefull day, conveniently forget that the migrants and the "others", were always there.
Migrants have always lived in these blue collar pockets, they couldnt afford not to, and this is seen in every similar town and suburb across this country, and these suburbs are better for it. Migrants bring, what Australia sadly lacks...culture.
And culture is what keeps these communities together, not ethnically, but economically and socially. I grew up in a suburb much like Cronulla, much like Marrickville or Fawkner, or Footscray. A suburb where everyone was in it together, and sadly, that collective determination has gone by the wayside for hustle culture and gettin theirs.
The tighter the purse strings are pulled, and the more we strive for induvidual outcomes...the more we side eye outsiders, the trust in community fails and we end up with tribalist bullshit.
Cronulla wasnt at all an outlier, it wasnt even an irregular occurrence.....because violence is perpetrated daily through any social paradigms which are exclusionary. by @j2ske
