Went down a curious little rabbit hole a few months ago and ended up making a visual essay about it!

It started with two lists of “essential English” vocabulary, and a question: what could the differences tell us about ourselves?

I think language, in more ways than one, is a kind of mirror. Through it, the lists reflect a life that moved further from its own making; a world that has become more connected, more capable, and able to reach much further than before, but not without leaving some things behind.

Made a lil project about words. Well, about a couple thousand very specific words, and what they may say about us.

Currently on display at the Clive Davis Gallery (370 Jay st, Brooklyn) through June 12 – Come check it out if you’re in the area!

The show includes a visual essay that breaks down what I think are some interesting findings…
A publicly available online version will be published very soon, too, so stay tuned!

Had the chance to show War at @theblanc_ny, exactly one year after presenting it as my thesis. Running in real-time, the piece delivers quotes from news coverage on wars and violent conflicts around the world, and serves as a suggestion on how to consume news updates on these matters.

So grateful for the time, the space, and the conversations that formed around it. Thank you to everyone who took the time to engage with it so thoughtfully. Hearing how it resonates and what it brings up for people means absolutely everything 🤍

These days feel like an appropriate time to finally share my thesis project, titled “War”, that I presented at NYU just over a month ago.

It’s a near real-time installation that delivers quotes taken directly from news coverage of conflicts around the world. The quotes are presented as-is, and completely stripped of their original context, to a set of hand-held, pager-like devices.
“War” brings up the language used to describe war as it happens to be: not headlines, interpretations, or summaries, but the actual words and phrases people use.
There’s no single expression that can express what war is. But read over time, side by side, something starts to emerge; something that’s difficult to name, something that’s painfully familiar. That’s what I wanted to hold onto. It’s an attempt to create an object that physically embodies this ongoing, unpredictable, unresolved reality of conflict, the very idea of what “war” is. It asks us to slow down, to listen, and to reflect on how we approach and process this reality. How we think and talk about it. To face the experiences of others, and perhaps to recognize something of ourselves in them.

In the last few years a lot of us Israelis have been asking each other “what’s your red line?”. It started to feel as if there’s a point in the near future from which there would be no way to return to “normal” and that we have to act now. It has a sense of urgency to it. And yet, quite too often, many of us have found ourselves moving our red lines. waiting any longer, pushing it further beyond that point might be a risk we simply cannot afford to take.
As a way of coping with this reality, I made this device called The Red Line. It serves as a commentary on how we cope with escalating crises, highlighting this tendency we have to shift our threshold for what we deem acceptable over time.

LIGHTROOM is a solar-powered project @xiatototom and I made last semester. It operates somewhat like a camera that captures the passage of time through sunlight and culminates in a series of prints that trace the sun’s path and intensity over time.

At the heart of LIGHTROOM is a mechanism featuring a shutter-like and a rolling film-like system, all powered by solar energy. We’re using solar panels that not only power the device but also dictate its operations. The device houses a Cyanotype-covered paper that changes its color when exposed to sunlight. As the shutter periodically opens throughout the day, this paper captures the sun’s trajectory, creating prints that reflect variations in solar intensity and patterns over time.

The rolling mechanism activates when there’s insufficient sunlight, essentially “rolling the film” in preparation for the next exposure. Additionally, we use a microcontroller to manage the opening and closing of the shutter at regular intervals only during peak sun hours in order to save on energy consumption.

Light Room is a nod to the traditional darkroom used in photography. However, instead of developing photos in the dark, it invites the sun in to “develop” images of itself.

A loanword is a word at least partly assimilated from one language (the donor language) into another language (the recipient language). Experts estimate that around 80% of words in the English language are loanwords.

We used a statistical model to generate new loanwords that are remixes of preexisting loanwords. The new loanwords’ letters are then converted into symbols that represent a combination of the corresponding typographical sign of the sound they make in multiple different languages.

Every symbol has its own particular “physical” properties that are a direct result of its shape, allowing for unique interplay between the different letters of each word — creating a “culture” out of a mix of cultures.

Each petri dish displays one new loanword at a time. A new loanword is being generated every 30 seconds.
