Leaving these here from today’s session - just a few light sets with a cleanish form as a reference of where I need to come back to. Left shoulder is fooked, so will have to back off for a bit. Old man can’t go as hard as I used to or would like to, but it is what it is! by @jaaaaaassson

Outdoor sessions back on the menu ☀️ The secret to get this deep is to use bars where the bolts are so loose, they have just enough wobble in them to make your bum squeeze so tight that you can get this deep. by @jaaaaaassson

20kg 90 HSPU 🥵. Started at the bottom because I didn’t wanna stack it kicking up into a handstand 😆 Didn’t think I’d get it. Not my best form but with 20kgs on me I’m just happy nothing broke. Hardest part was timing the push with the balance, the push was easier than I thought but had to go super slow for the last quarter so I could maintain balance and not lose the fucker at the top which should be easiest part, except the weight likes to give you a little extra fuck you just for good measure. Nevertheless always a good day when you get to train with the bros @kurtcourtney @robjbullen @coachnevi at @inspiredmvmt by @jaaaaaassson

90 degree HSPU is not a strength movement!

A mistake I see a LOT of people make when trying to learn the 90 HSPU is that they are trying to muscle through it rather than use efficiency.

The first rep in this post is separated in to 2 parts, the first 3/4 of the rep is 80% glute ‘drive’…NOT strength. Squeezing the glutes, locking out the legs, and driving them up toward the sky as hard as you can.

The other 20% is the upper body simply applying pressure (about as much as you would for an explosive push up) whilst maintaining the center of gravity over the hands to keep ‘balanced’.

From there, it’s just a well timed push to handstand, just like a HSPU. That part should be easy.

The second rep is timing the final push at the perfect time, just before momentum from the glute ‘drive’ maxes out, to carry you up to handstand and bring the rep home.

Here are the 5 things that are most important when it comes to the 90 HSPU:

1. Understanding the path, both eccentric and concentric
2. Understanding when and how to transition from the eccentric to concentric
3. Understanding how to apply force
4. Understanding when to apply force
5. Strength

If strength was the most important thing, anyone that is strong could do 90s, but they can’t. Until they have 1-4 covered. And by then, they don’t need their strength to make it work.

Obviously it helps if you have a heap of strength, but for those who don’t, don’t stress, you’ll get strong enough learning steps 1-4.

There are a million things to add to this, if you’ve made it this far you’ve probably got the patience to work long and hard enough to get a solid 90! by @jaaaaaassson

I used to describe Yannick as “the strongest person you’ve never heard of.” Then Yannick started coaching, posting, and now everyone has heard of him and… we found someone even stronger, someone even quieter on social media. And now that title belongs to Jason.

When Yannick and I decided to put together a post about the 90 degree handstand push-up, we knew Jason had to be part of it. You don’t see it in this video, but he holds what I would genuinely call a contender for one of the best 90 degree HSPU. And as you can clearly tell, Jason was wildly enthusiastic about speaking on camera - it only took a mere six hours of Yannick and me aggressively waterboarding him to get him to agree.

Regardless, the full 90 degree handstand push-up is often underappreciated. Too many settle for elbow levered shortcuts or straddles that serve more as decoration than integrity. But the 90 degree shouldn’t be seen as merely a bit of planche push-up turned HSPU. It’s rather an extension of the full-range handstand push-up, with added load and mechanical complexity. It asks for both control and structural honesty.
What it teaches is simple, yet profound - the body will always search for the easiest route, but growth lives in choosing the more demanding path. In that sense, the 90 degree is more than a skill, it’s a test of whether you’re willing to resist convenience and invest in integrity.
Because, in the end, how we move is how we think. And the way you approach the impossible says far more than whether or not you can complete it.
